Petty Officer of the day 63 The Petty Officer of the day will be taken in turn from all the First class Petty Officers.

In case of the proper P.O. of the day being on duty or on leave the next available P.O. in turn is to be told off for the duty.

The Master at Arms is to keep the list and tell off the P.O. of the day.

Their duties are 1st To attend to all issues of provision, spirits, clothing, xc for the ships company

2nd To be responsible that they are of the proper quantity and quality

3rd To be responsible that they are fairly served out and no favouring

4th In the event of complaints from any of the Ships company they are to attend to them, and also in the case of they them selves not being satisfied they are to re quest through the Master at arms to see the Executive Officer on th subject.

No issue is to take place unless the P.O. of the day is present, and if no issue takes place on the day or time appointed the P.O. is to report the fact to the executive Officer.

64 Petty Officer of the day

In the event of provisions not being sorted out at the appointed time through not being on board an entry in the log is to be made to that effect.

The P.O. of the day is to report to the Quar ter Master of the watch the weight etc of the fresh provisions received who will enter it in the log. Daily Issues 12.30 P.M. Grog, One water, 3.45 " Meat Vegetables & Bread also Sugar & Coffee to Ships Cook.

Weekly issues 3.45 P.M Monday. Tea Cocoa & Sugar to Mefses.

Monthly issues 3.45 P.M. 7th of each month If the 7th falls on a Saturday or Sunday then serve out on Monday. Oatmeal Mustard Pepper Salt and Vinegar to Mefses. Tea and Sugar to Temperance Men and Boys.

No Vegetables are to be kept on the lower deck.

When Potatoes are brought on Board. The Petty Officer is not only responsible that the weight is correct but also that they are proper quality and he is not to give a receipt until he is satisfied that such is the case

The P.O. will have to make good to the Ships company, any loss incurred through neglect on his part in the performance of this duty.

No Man is to be placed on compensation without the Captains authority. If during his absence from any cause the ser vice the man is to be employed on renders it desirable that compensation should be granted it can be done temporarily. The necessary authority being obtained at the first opportunity after the Captains return.

Previous to their leaving the Ship the Men are to acquaint the Master at Arms who will acquaint the Accountant Officer, If they fail to do so their rations will be issued to the mefs they belong to.

On their return on board the Master at Arms is to inform the Accountamt Officer in order that their rations may be again issued.

68 The Ward Room

The Ward room servants will have leave on alternate nights.

The case of a servant remaining on board will not affect the other servants on board on his proper night.

The servant who has slept on board will turn out with both watches, at 5.A.M., in the mor ning, scrub out the Wardroom, Pantry & Smoking room, clean the Companion stairs, Scuttles & Skylights Smoking room hatch & windows.

The other servant will be on board at 7. A.M.

He will prepare the Officers Breakfast, if required.

If he has slept on board he will turn out at 6.15 A.M. and clean out the Smoking room.

Each servant will then clean out the Cabins appertaining to them.

If a servant is required for duty on shore the ser vant whose turn it is for leave will take that duty. i.e. the servant who slept on board the previous night.

The Ward room Pantry Smoking room xe will be inspected daily and be ready for inspection at divisions, or Quarters for inspection - or if none at 9.30 A.M.

Servants 69

The Ward room Steward will be on board by 8. A.M. with stores and provisions requird for the day.

He will see that the servants perform the duties enumerated above for cleaning the Ward room Smoking room etc, -

He will keep his Store room clean.

The Wardroom Steward will see that the Mefs Silver, Glasfs, Crockery ware xc is kept clean and in good the servants being told off to do this duty during the day.

The Steward will pay particular attention to the cleanliness of the drawers in the side board, cupboard, pantry, also that the pantry is kept free from slops the sink regularly emptied and anything likely to cause obnox ious smells immediately removed.

He will see that in addition to being daily dusted, the furniture and wood work is thoroughly cleaned every Friday.

The scuttles in the Captains Cabin are to be closed every evening after he has left the Ship.
