I regret exceedingly my inability to meet them in Wednesday next - the more so as there are many points about my plans which I feared might be overlooked without a personal explanation - but as I am persuaded each design will meet with due consideration I feel perfectly safe in your hands -

Allow me to remain

On returning to Bal[t?] last after a few [-weeks-?] days absence I found your kind invitation to attend the laying of the corner Stone of your new University - which I have great pleasure in accepting but as I am called away to Norfolk for a day or two to prepare for commencing a new Episcopal Church there - I may be delayed somewhat in reaching Tennessee - & therefore enclose one or two letters which have been kindly furnished me by friends - for your perusal - I can obtain any number of these recommendations - should the Committee desire them -

My dear Sir:

Your favor of the 5th ult. inviting me to be present at the laying of "the Corner Stone of the principal building of the University of the South" on the 10th inst. has just been received, having been, by mistake, addressed to me at Sparta.

It would give me great pleasure to be present at the highly interesting occasion of beginning an enterprize which is destined, I doubt not, to exert the most salutary influence upon American Civilization; but my engagements here are of so binding

Dr Davis compliments to Bishop Otey & gratefully acknowledged his note of invitation to attend the interesting ceremonies of the 10th Inst.- connected with the "laying of the Corner Stone of the principal building of the University of the South"--

It would give him great pleasure to be present were he not prevented by the indisposition of some members of his family--

Very respectfully [?] [?] Davis
