Dear Sir

Much
obliged for the honour confered upon
me, by the invitation of the Ex. Com-
to attend the laying of the corner{underlined} stone{underlined}
of the "University{underlined} of{underlined} the{underlined} South{underlined}," I beg
leave to send my regrets, that cir-
cumstances will not grant me the
high privilege of witnessing the im-
posing ceremony of the 10th Inst--
But, with great faith in the speedy
success of the enterprise, I will be
permitted to unite my most ardent
petitions, to those of the Church, for the
future prosperity and usefulness of
this splendid scheme, resulting from
the pious, patriotic zeal & energy of
our Southern Bishops, who secured
the aid of the more wealthy laity.
