It rained several times
during last night, & again
today: this afternoon about
3 o'clock we had a heavy
rain & some thunder & lightning
coming from N.W. but the
wind changed again to N.E.,
and this evening it looks
as though we might have more
rain. We heard today that
the remains of the Kummer
young men ("Charles & Robert")
had been recovered & were
to be buried on Wednesday. There was
a "trial" at Esq. Fairall's office
this afternoon between two
colored men (John Rounds &
Frank Thomas) but it did not
amount to anything, except to
cost taxpayers about 4.50 in
"costs".

Ther. TUES. MAY 9th, 1899. Wind
Most of today has been clear
& pleasant. Harriet wrote to Letitia
and I to Edwd Kummer; the former's
letter went in todays 2. o'clk
mail, & mine will go in tomorrow
mornings. Edwd & the
boys next door put us up a trellis
on the line between the lots
for the "Wisteria" to run over.
I went to the store and to
Fairall's. Edwd Bentley sent
us a letter from his wife in
Medford, giving particulars
of the sad loss of the two
Kummer brothers: it was
the saddest story that could
be found, even in fiction I
have never met with anything
so touching or pathetic.
