How many send lunch? About half of
those present, including guests furnish five meals
a day during harvest; others think the custom
not only unnecessary but positively injurious, as
the repast generally consists of pie or gingerbread

quantity of ice water, it is not surprising
that harvest hands are often taken suddenly
ill. One pattern wife says the lunch
should be sent if the husbands prefer it,
and we will merely remark with Captain
Cuttle that "the bearings of this observation
lies in the application of it".

The wages for this season are one dollar
per day for wheat and 75 cts for grass. A
visitor informed us that the rule in Va. was
to give a bushel of wheat or its equivalent in
cash. What ought to be done with the
oats on the lawn at Lucknow? the object being
to improve the grass some advised to cut now,
others to allow it to ripen and fall, so our hostess
can do as she pleases.
