Home Interest Society Minutes

Home Interest, which refers to itself as a “Society,” was founded in Sandy Spring, Maryland, on August 27th, 1870 and has met monthly (more or less) to the present day. Early in its existence, meetings were not held in June and July to free up members to attend to agricultural and horticultural activities; Home Interest still skips some meetings in the summer, so that, among other things, members can fully support the annual Picnic and Bazaar benefitting MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, formerly Montgomery General Hospital. The name of the Society was taken from “The Home Interests” column (1870-1887) in New York's “Weekly Tribune.” Home Interest meetings serve as an opportunity for the exchange of experience and information related to a broad range of topics. One of the original primary purposes of the Society was to identify and record items to be included in the “Annals of Sandy Spring,” a function that continues today. Membership is limited to 16 households
