Drayton #641 Aug 26 - 30

The regular meeting of the Home Interest was held at
"Drayton" August 26th. The meeting was called to order
by Samuel Bond who was in attendance after a
long absence. The Home Interest is always glad to
welcome Sam and Emma, and only wish - they could
attend oftener. The minutes of the meeting at
"Lulworth" were read by Mrs. Weld, and accepted as
read. The September Meeting will be held at "Shadyside",
The home of Mr. & Mrs. Elgar Farquhar, Oct.
"Retreat".
Sallie Brooke & Harry Stabler Forethough Com.
reported as follows. Sallie thinks this the time to
rearrange planting, and rectify all former mistakes.
Harry Stabler advises the planting of cover crops at
once, and as so many shrubs have died at his home
he thinks all H. I. members should observe the
condition of theirs. For September Eliz. Ligon and
Cynthia Stabler were appointed Forethought Com.
Elizabeth Ligon asked for news for "The
Annals of Sandy Spring. Lucy Moore suggests
the drouth, as the terrible one of 1874 was not
mentioned in "The Annals" for that year.
Mrs. Moore brought up the subject of friends
filling the graves at Sandy Spring meeting funeral. She
thinks it hard and trying for the elderly men on
whom this sad duty so often falls. The Home Interest
agrees, but thinks it can be controlled only by
the creation of public opinion against it.
Milton Bancroft brought up the subject of sign
boards along roads, and discussed ways and means
of controllng this public eyesore. In Maryland
no legal means exist, and public opinion and
landowners good taste alone can abate this nuisance
It was moved by Elizabeth Ligon, 2nd by Harry
Stabler that a message be sent "The Community
Council "That The "Home Interest" is in favor of
removing signs from our beautiful Maryland
roadsides. The Motion was unanimously carried.
The Essay for the evening was by Huldah
Janney - "A resume of the activities on this old
world from its beginnings to 9 P.M. Aug. 26th
