Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

9th cloudy all morning; a bright afternoon: William Stabler and Eliza Brooke here to dinner: Annie Marshall called in the afternoon and I took a ride with her:

10th. 82 biscuit A rainy day.

11th. A clear cool day: I went to Sherwood a while in the afternoon: father came home.

12th. A clear cool day: We butchered: I went to Uncle Samuels awhile in the afternoon. Wiliam came home from Baltimore. and set up with cousin Roger. Nicholas Snowdens man came up for the pigs.

13th. A cool clear day; cutting up the pork: Mary Miller called here:

14th. A cool day; very clear: father went to Annapolis and back William and I at Harewood after supper: Joe finished the threshing at his place.

15th. Snowed nearly all day: Joe took a dead hog to Sharon in the afternoon: father and mother went to Uncle Samuels: Joe to Brooke Grove at night.

16th. A clear cold day: At meeting: Charlie Stabler here to dinner. Joe at Stanmore after supper: William at Uncle Sams.

17th. A beautiful clear day: Aunt Lizzie called in the morning on her way from James Brookes; I went to Harewood awhile Joe went for Lucy: I went to Charlie Stablers and staid until they came up again; father took the turkeys to Uncle Samuels, in the afternoon.
