Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

Uncle Tom and Debbie, Uncle Caleb and William Stabler here to dinner: James Brooke called in the afternoon.

19th. Cold and cloudy most of the day; I went to Uncle Samuels a while in the afternoon: Mother and I went to Uncle Edwards after supper; father went to Rockville. Aunt Sally Gilpin called in the morning.

20th. A pleasant day: Clear. I put Henrietta's crib quilt in frame. Went to Sherwood after supper; father came home from Rockville; William from Alexandria.

21st. A cool day: I went to the store before Meeting: found Annie Marshall and her Aunt Mary there, I took Annie a ride, and brought her back to the store; father went from Meeting to Rockville: finished the quilt.

22d. A beautiful clear day: Caroline Sedgwick here dipping candles: I called to see Cousin Isabel in the afternoon, then went to Sharon; William went for me. father came home in the evening, from Rockville.

23d. A rainy day; Darling here early, to breakfast; father went with him to Phils; father and Mother at Uncle Samuels in the afternoon; Caroline Sedgwick here again dipping candles.

24th. 100 biscuit A cold windy day; father went to Rockville again; I went to Cherry Grove in the afternoon: Joe to Brooke Grove to set up; father came home.

25th. A cold day: Uncle Caleb and Aunt Ann here before Meeting; Charlie Stabler and Aunt An Sarah Thomas here to dinner: William went home with Sarah in the afternoon.

29th. A pretty day; father went to Rockville; Joe to Williams Stabler's sale: I went to see Cousin Isabel in the afternoon, and to see Aunt Sally a while; Sherwood after supper, to stay during lecture;

12th. mo. 1st. A cold windy day: Father came home from Washington, where he went yesterday from Rockville: Joe to Brooke Grove at night

2d. A cold windy day; at meeting. Phil here to dinner. William at Mary Chandlee's to dinner, and Samuel Turners to supper: James Brooke here in the afternoon: father at Aunt Sallys after supper.

3d. 80 biscuit A clear pleasant day: father called at Uncle Samuel's in the morning; he and Joe and Hallowell Farquhar at Joe's place putting up a threshing Machine; Hallowell here to dinner; R. and G. Tucker here at work William Stabler and Bennie Miller here to supper, went with our boys to Frank Thomas's husking; William here all night; I put a quilt in frame

4th Snowed all morning; cleared off about noon; Annie Porter, Sarah Thomas and Ella Gilpin here helping quilt; William Kinnard came after supper: William took Ella home.

5th. A cool raw day: At meeting. Father went to Scholeys after dinner, then to Uncle Samuels to supper to clean his clock; Kate here awhile in the afternoon; Sarah Stone came, and helped me quilt; James came after supper; we got the quilt out: young Dr. Magruder came to see father whilst he was away.

6th. A cool day; father went to Brooke Grove in the afternoon and mother to James Brooke's; William Stabler here to supper: William and I at Harewood awhile after supper.

7th. Cloudy most of the morning: William started early for Baltimore on his way to Q. M. father started at noon by way of Laurel; Aunt Lizzie went with him. I called awhile at Sherwood after dinner: Joe threshing at his place.

8th. A rainy day. Fred Stabler here to supper: he and Joe went to Brooke Grove to set up; William Stabler came here on his way from Baltimore; rode father's horse up from Laurel.
