Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

this morning, covered with sleet. Went to meeting. Joe went to John Hall's after supper: William to Clifton Father to Uncle Samuels; started to go to the Cottage, but they were not at home.

16th. A clear pleasant day. Lucy went to Clifton; Father out all day on business; I called at Harewood in the afternoon.

17th. Father went to Rockville. I dipped candles.

18th. Lucy came home before meeting; went to W. P. Millers from meeting; Father and mother went to Avondale; Father on his way to Anapolis; Uncle Caleb here before meeting.

19th. A beautiful clear day: Lucy came home from W. P. Millers in the morning, and we both went to the Cottage after dinner to help quilt.

20th. Father and mother came home from Avondale.

21st. Father went to Colesville in the afternoon; Lucy and I went to Elgar Hallowells; Joe taken with a stiff back this morning; This is Uncle Samuels birth day.

22d. A beautiful bright day: Joe not up 'till after dinner; Warwick Stabler dined here: I got a letter from Debbie Stabler; I was at meeting. Edward Painter called here

before meeting: Father went to Alban Gilpins after supper.

23d. A bright beautiful day; Joe better; Father started before I was up in the morning to go to the Widow Burfords, went to several other place, at the Cottage to supper: Lucy and I went to the store in the morning; I went to Cherry Grove and to Phils in the afternoon; Lucy at Uncle Edwards: Lizzie Tyson, Harvey George, and Ginnie Fawcett called here, and Charlie Stabler; Frank Thomas here to supper.

24th. A beautiful clear day; Father went to Rockville; Lucy spent the day at Brooke Grove: Lizzie Tyson and Martha Lea, called in the morning to bring a book for Joe to read. Joe's birth day.

25th. Cloudy in the morning, cleared off in the afternoon: Uncle Tom here before meeting: Grandmother, Aunt Polly and Aunt Rebecca spent the day here: Uncle William, Uncle Samuel and Fred Stabler here to supper: Nellie Miles spent a couple of hours here before lecture time.

26th. James Henning dined here on his way to Hintons to marry Rebecca Hinton; Father went to Uncle Williams with him; Phil called from Harewood in the afternoon, and took me to Olney; Father went down to Scholeys in the morning, early.

27th. I came home from Olney in the afternoon; called at Stanmore

on my way down: called at Fair Hill directly after dinner. Father went to Baltimore; Joe over to Phils this afternoon: Oliver Scott here to supper William went to Walnut Hill after supper: this is Henrietta's birth day.

28th. Father came home to dinner; staid all night at Avondale went to a Magistrate's meeting at Higgins.

29th. A beautiful clear day; cold. mother went to meeting, and then to the Cottage in the afternoon: Joe went to Phils in the afternoon: I did not go to meeting. Phil and Kate, and Oliver Scott here to supper; Father went for mother after tea; Aunt Lizzie and Eddie called here in the afternoon; William went to Uncle Sam's.
