an object of great interest on the days the flag was raised when the occasion of the little Leland's birthday.

Always have you both been connected with the progress of California, aiding in ^the growth of public welfare connected historically with the advancement of the State. Always have you both been central figures in the grand cause of education for the young.

Thus it was - that when the California Children were visiting the World's Fair, and being received by the Board of Lady Managers at the California building the announcement was made in the address of greeting of the sorrowful news, and the flag placed at half mast. A shock passed over the faces of the hundred there assembled at the banquet table, as the announcement was made - for all felt that the cause of education had lost a grand patron, and the young, a good friend.

Individually, as well as collectively, were we oppressed by the sad news of the death of one known to us all so well.

Your bereavement no one can lighten, but the fact that so many others are sorrowing with you, gives the little grace that comes from ^ the sympathy of the human heart, and that is the best we have to offer.

With the hope and the trust that you may still be saved for many days of usefulness here on earth, though your comrade-and-husband has fallen in the battle,

I am, very sincerely, Ella Sterling Cummins
