question for mankind, and then it was unfinished. You will no doubt find the only comfort Earth can offer in finishing his work. It will call you out of yourself and [discovered?] activities that are wholesome to mind and heart. It will give you a continued sense of his companionship and presence. Gods added grace you will need and I am sure you will find it will be bountiously given for the asking. I greatly regret that I cannot join at his grave the loving friends who will gather about it. Mrs McKee and Mrs Dimmick send their loving sympathy.

Just as I was starting for Chicago, on Wednesday Eve, the sad news of the death of Senator Stanford was brought to me from the car. I sent you a brief message of sympathy. I got home this morning and cannot do any thing tho until I have more fully expressed to you my profound upset and sympathy. I think I know, better than most, what you feel and suffer.
