Receive my heartfelt sympathy in the hour of your heavy bereavement, by the sudden passing away of your beloved husband.
The Senator will be deeply regretted by the whole country, but especially by the state of California, as one of her formost [sic] pioneers, business man, polititian, [sic] and Statesman, but worthyest [sic] of all the greatest philanthropist California ever produced.

My dear Mrs Stanford,
You will please pardon me for this liberty I am taking, but I could not refrain from doing so, as my Heart is in the deepest sympathy for you, in this your sad hour of bereavement.
I know the good kind loving Husband you have lost, and the most useful man, that California cannot replace.
