PASTOR'S STUDY, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.
June 30. 1893,
Mrs Stanford
My dear friend:
I have thought it a kindness to leave you alone with your great sorrow and loneliness for a little while, Even Jesus did not go to Mary and Martha till four days had passed from the hour of their bereavement.
When on my return to the city I heard of the Senator's departure to God and his dear boy, my first thought was that of gratitude that you were permitted to nurse him down to his rest. To us who knew him and you from the outside it always appeared that he loved more and more to lean on your sympathy and affection. Be grateful that he had you on whom

to lean in the last hours of mortal weakness.
Human words of consolation seem almost like an impertinence to one who knows as well as you do, the direct way to the presence of Him who spake as neer man spake.
As for me I could say but one thing: Remember that these partings are not "Goodbye" but only "Goodnight", the morning cometh soon, and there will be no night there,
Faithfully yours
