Mrs. Leland Stanford,

I take the liberty to write you, because I can no longer refrain from my expression of deep grief for the loss to humanity of the only Leland Stanford and those dear to him, that ever lived in my estimation as the highest and most generous souls that has been taken from those who loved him and still cherish as something dear his memory. From the interviews I had with him through several years, I learned to esteem and love him more and more and admire the grandeur of soul he possessed, one more tie beyond "The Shoreless River" God doith all things well" and His ways are beyond "Nurtal Kin. Your noble husband is only absent, I feel an abiding faith that all is well.

I sent you some papers with his picture, and thought it appropriate to publish (over)

the short Poem entitled "The Shoreless River," written by my eldest sister about five days before she bade us farewell for-ever or until we meet "over there".

Please not think that I do wrong to write this letter because you can appreciate in part the kind veneration and affection that Hon. Leland Stanford won from me through our frequent intercourse.

Accept my heartfelt sympathy and assurance that I loved him as a Brother for all the kind and human deeds and expressions that I know could only be the result of the grandest desires and of the greatest soul.

Very Respectfully

A. E. Redstone
