From Leeland Stanford Silver City Idaho Mrs Leeland Stanford San Francisco Cal
Dear Madam
I presume by this time you have received numerous letters from your many Friends and relatives sympathizing with you for the loss of your very notable and esteemed husband, the late Leeland Stanford. But I hope you will excuse my hesitency for not writing you ere this. But I deemed it an imposition on my part to write you almost instantaneously on the receipt of your husband's death and taking into consideration his vast fortune after a silence of so many years. So I now take the opportunity of informing you of my existance

I am the oldest son of Lyman Stanford a first cousin of your husband's and I can assure you it has been the height of my ambition since maturity to take a trip to California and form the acquaintance of my relatives there. But sorry to say that fortune has not favored me with a very large amount of this worldly goods and I have always found a permanent occupation in sustaining a livihood for myself and family. Therefore denying me the pleasure I so long sought for. But still I cant complain as I am still living and enjoying good health - a gift which we all ought to be thankful for and face the world with all its adversities with confidence in ourselves and and prosperity, may follow in time and I hope some day to be able to afford to go and visit my relatives in the Golden State

and to be remembered as one of the family. The only favor I can ask is a reply to this letter of mine which will convince me that I am still recognized as a relative of the name and hope to make firmer acquaintance in the near future. Hoping this will reach you safely and also find you enjoying good health with all my heartfelt sympathy for you in your trouble. I remain yours sincerely,
Leeland Stanford Silver City Idaho Ouyher County
