& am alone. But my loss was domestic - personal - yours is far reaching. Not only has the light of your domestic happiness gone out but you are filled with an undying regret that your husband was not spared to continue the perfecting of the National works in which he & you were so earnestly & lovingly engaged. In the absence of particulars I can but vaguely estimate the loss the public has sustained by the death of Senator Stanford, but visions are before me of an unfinished University, of Palo Alto farm with its hundreds of living & loved pets, & above all, for I believe it of world wide importance, "The Government Loan & Real Estate Bill." About the University I am not so much concerned, for whilst the management remains in your hands, seconded by able & willing

trustees, fully seized of the national importance of the trust, its progress towards its anticipated greatness & usefulness, will be, I am sure, satisfactory to those actively engaged in the work, & to an expectant & critical public. But the Loan Bill, what will become of that proposal, as it must be, by all the financial institutions in the world. When shall we find another man of worth, ability & influence to take your husband's place in his masterly effort to solve the { currency ?} problem.

I hold this bill of such importance that I am quite disconsolate, and more than no ties, save this one, between my brother & myself still would I mourn my loss, & the peoples loss, whilst life lasts.

My dear Sister if my wandering thoughts weary

There are but a few of us left now, my Sister, and in a little while we too, will be gone, but we will be with the dear ones passed from our sight, & more lovingly united then ever before.

Affectionately your brother Thomas Stanford

P.S. Your very kind & interesting letter of Apr 10th was duly received. I cannot reply to it by this mail, but will before long. I will now write our Sister Helen a few lines. She, too, is a mourner & can understand the severity
