Sierra Nevada - If he had come in the ordinary way he would have missed the greater part of the evidence. We cherish the hope of seeing you in Cambridge, - do not you think Mr Stanford can make it possible? Cambridge is a quaint little place and rather bleak at this season but still it has some very pleasant people and the college with the library, collections etc give it an interest - Do not forget us, and with warm regards to your Mother & Sister, believe me Most cordially yours E. [ ?] Oct 10th My dear Mrs Stanford. Many thanks for your kind note which I received on the car and for the little cushion. I was mortified to have given you the trouble; - I should be, after all my experience, too good a traveller to leave things behind me, - but it's now too late to mend or to learn - We had a charming day on Monday and only regretted over and over again that you & Gov. on the contrary he thought she would rally and maybe gain strength to be up and about her room for a time at least: It is hard to see her suffer and feel helpless to help her.
If the dear Lord who understands it all was not with us - how terrible would our anxiety be. We cannot tell the working of mind as one lies prostrate:God does - and blessed be God he can whisper such words of peace and joy that the world does not know. He can help us to bear patiently the physical suffering... I do not wonder that so many persons become insane - want of trust and leaning on the only strength that can sustain -
I have just come from the bed-side. Harriet is sleeping. My thoughts turned to you for sympathy. Your own sorrows, help you to understand the bitterness of others woe. & yet dear friend I am now only speaking of the humanity of our love for those who make our daily life - human affection God has given to cheer, brighten & encourage us day by day in the duties that come to us. Jesus wept it is right, we cannot help feeling our losses, mourn them too, but our bereavement must not be selfish & unfit us for the work still before us. I am so glad from your letter that you feel the need of the work to show your faith & trust in God. that you are indeed leaning upon the Everlasting Arm - Gods love - for strength to do his will. If the dear Lord has made you a steward over ten talents in his strength, in his teaching & leading make it thru ten talents.
My dear, dear friend its rare for any one woman to have such opportunity to do for the Master as you. May the dear Father be your guide. lead you His way, help you to see God's way, not the way the thousand & one friends might choose or try to have you see.
