is of immense value, dear Jane I honor you in your thought & will, to do, no one will value them in view as yourself, & if they did; - they are not in circumstances to allow them to wear them. As you said in your letter to me "you wanted to carry out Lelands plans and wishes" - The dear Lord loves to honor and thus all that give for his cause - the good of others. - The Kindergarten schools are a great work - reaching out for the little ones before the streets claim them. Willing hearts & willing hands will always find plenty to do, & God loves the cheerful giver. "There is that scattereth and yet increaseth" and "he that watereth shall be watered himself" again, "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich and he addeth no sorrow with it" May all this be thine.

dont mind the speech of people. ask the dear Father to guide & lead you His way - then do as his spirit may lead & you will do right.

THE TASHMOO.

VINEYARD HAVEN, MASS.

that you are going to Europe to sell your diamonds for the benefit of the University. I think you are right. Who after you, could you leave them to. Have the joy & satisfaction of seeing in your own time just the good they will do. & I pray they may realize more than your fondest wishes may associate with them: A year ago, I gave my solitare ear rings and other jewels to a friend to sell & use the money for our city mission work just then needing money - I took them to Tiffany & they priced them & they sold for the exact sum I paid for them. now, when I go to N.Y. I shall go to the Deposit & take a layer crescent & cluster pin, etc - & give to the same cause. My daughter has enough of her own - let me give where it is needed. I have acted on your thought, only mine is a small way. while yours

I have sold my interest in our 12th st home and only keep my country home Millbrook. opposite the beautiful, Halcyon, where I met Mrs Boggs.

I came to Vineyard Haven to be with my daughter Mrs Davison - (Birdie) and her baby boy John Alden. two months old - I return to Millbrook this coming week for the autumn & New York for the winter. I wish you were living nearer that sometimes we could talk over other days & of dear ones. My life is now in the past. but I do not give up my mission work. visiting must come to me. I am more glad to see my friends and most fully appreciate their kindness in coming - I take small journeys & enjoy them - before the winter I mean to go to the cemetery Albany - shall go to "Dot's," think of the time: - I think it was, 1838, or 39 we first knew Mrs Covert. I was a school girl. living in Green st, before she learned her trade, about 58 years ago - or rather 60. years ago.

Not Knowing.

I know not what will befall me! God hangs a mist o'er my eyes; And thus at each step of my onward path He makes new scenes arise, And every joy he sends me comes As a sweet and glad surprise.

I see not a step before me, As I tread on, another year; But the past is still in God's keeping, The future his mercy shall clear, And what looks dark in the distance May brighten as I draw near.

For perhaps the dreaded future Is less bitter than I think; And the Lord may sweeten the waters Before I stoop to drink; Or, if Marah must be Marah, He will stand beside its brink.

It may be he keeps, waiting For the coming of my feet, Some gift of such rare blessedness,

NOT KNOWING. Some joy so strangely sweet, That my lips can only tremble With the thanks I cannot speak.

Oh restful, blissful ignorance! 'T is blessed not to know: It stills me in those mighty arms Which will not let me go, And sweetly hushes my soul to rest On the bosom which loves me so!

So I go on, not knowing: I would not if I might; I would rather walk in the dark with God, Than go alone in the light, I would rather walk with Him in faith Than walk alone by sight.

My heart shrinks back from trials, Which the future may disclose, Yet I never had a sorrow But what the dear Lord chose; So I send the coming tears back, With the whispered word, "He knows."
