Mrs. Leland Stanford My dear Madam
I have read with very great interest of your recent munificent gifts to The Leland Stanford Jr. University in memory of your dearly beloved son. Four years ago I had the privilege of visiting the College which gave me very great pleasure.
My husband, Mr. Francis H. Brewer, has had for several years a private school for Boys, especially adabted [sic] to those who from some limitation of mind need individual attention.
Last Summer Mr. Brewer was induced to invest in a zinc mine in Joplin Mo. With a friend , he gave his name at the Bank as a special

accommodation for several thousand dollars expecting the money would be paid back in a month, as in most ventures of the kind there. was one dishonest man in the co. and Mr. Brewer finds himself obliged to meet his half of the money. Unless some good friend comes to our aid our school will have to be sold to meet this demand. At present the mine does not promise any returns, to save a sheriff's sale it has been rented. We have paid for a little more than half the cost of our school, but cannot raise money on it unless it is sold. Our hearts are rent with anguish and in desperation I appeal to you - I could not ask you to give us money, but would you lend us at a low rate of interest three thousand dollars - allowing us to pay you back in small amounts. I have made it a subject of prayer hoping God would hear our cry

and when I read of your wonderful gifts I seem to feel that you would help us - I do not think you can possibly realize the relief and joy to our hearts your aid would bring us. My husband is a deacon in the Congregational Church in Fairfield of which Dr. Lamuel Franck Child author of "An Old New England Town" is pastor - We have always been teachers in Sunday School, it seems hard that at our time of life we should so suddenly have to leave our home - and with it our school. After a man has passed fifty it is very hard to obtain a new position. Whatever you may feel disposed to do for us will be most

gratefully appreciated and relieve anguish and sorrow that I never before dreamed possible
Awaiting your reply with interest, I am,
Most kindly yours, (Mrs.) Francis H. Brewer Fairfield, Conn.
