invitation as on former occasions and have made arrangements to spend one week in Monterey, as you will see by the inclosed letter of their secretary. In regard to the other note of the Native Song of the Golden West asking your contribution to the expenses of The Day, we had decided in committee to raise the funds ourselves, and so we did, and myself headed the subscription list. Now I do not know why they asked your assistance, as we did not authorize any one for it. I see by your letter that the Governor and yourself will try to come down to Monterey, nothing than your presence will give greater pleasure to the public and myself. By this mail I send a copy of the Monterey papers for you and Mrs Hughes, your sister, as she wished to have a copy. My kind regards to the Governor and you believe me your humble servant A D Casanova

Monterey May 21st 91 Mrs J. L. Stanford Dear Madam I rec'd your kind note today. Though my name is not in the papers as the manager on the feast day, I have been the principal person to arrange everything for the day. I had a Committee of gentlemen to whom I proposed my idea, and they all left to me to determine the best ways for the proceedings of the day. I wrote the programme myself and was agreed upon. Beside I have invited the Franciscans of Santa Barbara, of San Francisco, and one of the Franciscans of Watsonville is to give the prayer or oration of the day being a sketch of his life, as it is more appropriate than one of the Order of Fr Junipero should give the Oration, and not myself. Also I invited Judge Webb of Salinas to give the civic oration. All of these especially invited, and priests that have promised to come, will stay at my house, the few days that they can spare. For this I consider myself as having taken the leading part in the solemn day, as I did in the centennial of the landing of Fr Junipero on June 3d 1870, on the Centennial of his death in Carmelo the 28th of August 1884 and on this day of next month. Neither the Society of Pioneers of California of San Francisco I did forget; they accepted my

May 21st, 1891 Very Rev Father Casanova Your kind invitation to the Society of California Pioneers to participate at the unveiling of the monument to the memory of Father Junipero Serra was received in due time. Invitations will be sent out to each member of the Society immediately, and as favorable terms for transportation have been made with the R R Co. I have no doubt we will attend in force. I have no doubt including members of our families that the Pioneers will attend to the number of two hundred, and it would not surprise me to see four hundred. The R R Co allow us from the 2d to the 8th of June on our tickets so we will not be hurried in returning. Thanking you for your remembrance of us I am Respectfully Yours E P Marsellus Secretary

Mrs J.L. Stanford
Dear Madam I thank you for the keys of the Monument, and will take a special care of it. Yesterday I went to see the fence, and every thing is satisfactorily. Your much appreciated gift of the carpet is placed in the sanctuary, and looks rich before the font in the Tabernacle. May the Lord keep it on your account, and give you a place in Heaven.
By this mail I send you two "Monitors" where you will see some "marked" items, which I hope you will read.
Hoping the Governor is well. I remain respectfully Yours in X-
