resulting from the least efforts of attempted to make.

I wanted to tell you dear Mrs Stanford that the "In Memoriam" which you refer to as having deeply touched you, was the outcome of one bereaved mother's heart to another which had also suffered the same bitter pain of loss and separation. My only son died in his beautiful young manhood from the effects of a wound he received while making an effort to plant our Flag on the earthworks of a rebel battery his regiment was storming at Petersburgh, Va. It seems like a long time to look back for those who have had no such crucial loss. - but to me, it seems like yesterday

I also wanted to assure you dear Mrs Stanford, that I shall be sincerley glad to welcome you in my quiet suburban home when you have an hour or two at your disposal some pleasant morning.

as that is the only time of the day I am able to enjoy a friendly visit.

I have been reading with the deepest interest of Senator Stanfords generous and noble plans for the advancement of education, a higher morality, Chris -tian development, literature and science. His example must make its impression on this sordid world! While I think almost with reverence of what you are both doing my dear Mrs Stanford so unselfishly, I am afraid that I envy you the great power you have to do good- no- not the power so much as the will which is surely God-given.

With sincere regards I am Truly yours Anna Hanson Dorsey

Mrs Leland Stanford

Dear Madam, I am & have been in active practice in Los Angeles for seven years & in that I have so very often seen & felt the need of having a hospital here for children & women. Our county hospital is always full & overflowing & we have no place to put a poor sick child. They must either die or put up with the care received in small duty homes. My object in writing this letter is to ask for an interview with the view of bringing the subject very close to your heart & to request you to give a sum of money to build such an institution. If not for women and children for children alone. We do so much need a childrens hospital we have not even a few rooms where we may take a sick child from the noise and bad surroundings present in the homes of poor children. I enclose a letter from Hon. John Conners who so kindly aided me to obtain my foreign medical education & who has been so kind & generous to me & [--through--]

whose influence brought me to work in this beautiful state. Please do something for our town it will be for the state your husband & his friend Mr. Conners love so much and it will be such a blessing to our poor people to be remembered by your husband's life in this generous manner. I know you have done so much but then you so largely [illegible] with this [illegible] that for the cause I can ask such a gift. In memory of your son you have placed an educational everlasting monument - how will you not think of the sick children and give for your husband's memory one to comfort the sick body ?I want so much that you will permit me to visit you and that you will look up my past history before & since I came to this state. Write to Mr. Conners who has known me since I was first a poor struggling medical student in Boston and you will find my heart is in my work & that I do not ask anything for myself. Please return the letter and will you not consider my request and either come down here to see for yourself or appoint a time and place for me to see you. Do not let this letter fall upon you & make no impression. [right margin] It is a beautiful work to do for [sad ?] & helpless children [left margin] [illegible] I am too earnestly interested very sincerely & respectfully yours R. L. Dorsey
