threat is that if I do not retire, every friend I have in the legislature will be hunted down. The vindictiveness of Mr Herrin is apparent throughout.
My friends who know the real testimony as it is brought out, understand that neither corruption nor wrong-doing can be laid at my door; but I fear that the merciless press with their unwarranted distortions and their false but startling headlines may affect the judgment of those who take them as honest and who have no familiarity with the facts as they exist.

Mr Herrin and the R. R. influence are accused by my friends of making all the trouble which I am experiencing, both as to my candidacy and as to the disgrace they are endeavoring to heap upon my name. They have proved only that I have used every honorable method to help elect a republican legislature, and nothing more; but they seek to have it appear that I have attempted bribery. This they cannot do without resorting to perjured testimony.
In my campaign I followed religiously the advice of Senator Perkins and have made the same campaign he made on two occasions. The
