because now that his father is gone, he cherishes that name above all other. Please remember me to your husband, and say to him that my greatest desire is that my child may be as good and noble a man as he.

My dear Mrs Stanford

I cannot express to you how gratified we were on receiving your beautiful present to our boy the little fellow hears the names of two great men and I will try to teach him to follow in their footsteps. I know it would please my dear old father, [Dr?] Gwin, to know his grandson is named after the Gov. for he was always his devoted friend. My husband wanted the baby named Stanford.

Geo. H. Gray Attorney at Law

28 Jacobson Building Denver, October, 13 th 1895.

Mrs. Leland Stanford, Palo Alto, Cal.

Dear Madam:-

Sentimentalists may loose [sic] no faith in the sun dial as a time piece, when set to the meridian of theory, yet watching the hour glass from day to day, season to season, will convince the world of the practicle [sic] value of chronometres of progress, moved by main-springs of human action.

Your victory is not alone a personal one. It is individual to every human being, whose soul is attuned to the key of action. If progress is evolution, there must be a fruit of success as well as a flower of conception. There can be no vested purpose without a vested right.

Please accept my congratulations. I am glad for you. I think Mr. Garber has made a magnificent fight for you. You could not have an abler representative. I hope you will soon have the judgment of these courts affirmed.

Yours truly, Geo. H. Gray

Ansd Aug 12th 1893

My dear Mrs Stanford,

It has come to my knowledge since I took office that Mr Redington one of the deputies was given his place at the special request of Governor Stanford. Since I have known this it has constantly been in my mind to retain him in his position, if I possibly could do so.

You are aware of the pressure brought to bear upon one in connection with a political office, and I do not say that I can keep the young gentleman, but I wish you to know that I earnestly desire to do so out of my love for the memory of the Governor, and my desire to do what I think would please him is even stronger now, that he has passed away, than if he were still with us

Very sincerely

Wm M. Gwin
