My dear Mrs Stanford,

It has come to my knowledge since I took office that Mr Redington one of the deputies was given his place at the special request of Governor Stanford. Since I have known this it has constantly been in my mind to retain him in his position, if I possibly could do so.

You are aware of the pressure brought to bear upon one in connection with a political office, and I do not say that I can keep the young gentleman, but I wish you to know that I earnestly desire to do so out of my love for the memory of the Governor, and my desire to do what I think would please him is even stronger now, that he has passed away, than if he were still with us

Very sincerely

Wm M. Gwin
