Miss Camilla Leach, Dear Madam:

It is my very painful duty to make to you the following communication.

It has been decided that the interests of the University require a reorganization of the management of Roble Hall at the end of the present month.

The grounds for this decision, for which I am responsible, lie in my conviction that notwithstanding the personal respect and kindly feeling

which all with whom you have come in contact have towards you, your methods and experience do not adequately fit you for the difficult task which has been assigned to you.

You may choose whatever time of withdrawal will cause you the least embarrassment, and the contents of this letter need not be make public unless you choose to have it so. Your salary for the current month will be paid to you upon the return of the enclosed receipt.

Again accept my assurances of personal consideration and my regrets that a task so painful seems to me to be a duty.

Mrs. Leland Stanford: Dear Friend:

I enclose a letter which was directed to you with orders that it be opened here if you were away from Palo Alto. The letter, I presume, explains itself.

You will be interested to know that our Commencement Exercises passed off very pleasantly indeed. We had the Gymnasium full of people and [a ?] we had a very charming and inspiring address from Rev. Myron W. Reed of Denver on the subject of "What makes a Nation great?"

38 graduates of this year Mr. E.L. Richardson, has been made teacher of French in Vanderbilt University at Nashville, Tenn.

More than half of the graduates of this year will return next year for further study. The others who wish to teach have already found good places. There is no doubt that the teachers we send out from here will be in demand throughout the country.

Mrs. Jordan and the children are extremely well and send their good wishes. I expect to go East to-morrow. to be gone three weeks. I wish to visit my mother, who now lives in Chicago with my sister. She is now eighty years old - too old to visit me so
