over five weeks taking the waters twenty six days in the middle of the cure I took a rest, and went to Oberamergau spending the 25th of Aug my birth day seeing the Passion Play. Ten years ago we were here. Henry and I went there together, Mr. Stanford was taking the cure here. I was so overcome by my emotions at that time it was more pain to me than pleasure. I was in a measure prepared this time to take in its meaning and I am very thankful I went. I have lived up strictly to old Dr. [Dirief's?] orders though I am now able to walk five miles a day with ease and if conditions are favorable walk seven. I am dieting strictly but have gained four pounds. I leave for Paris to morrow morning stay over night at Frankfort the next day go to Metz stay two days and nights. Jennie has been there one month at a branch of the Paris Sacred Heart Convent. She has a special sister to care for her, teach her French so that she can enter the S.H. of Paris Oct 3rd and go into a

class of her own age. She enteres [sic] there for one year, giving special attention to french German and Music - also History. They do not allow a word spoken but French. Jennie thought she knew French at home but it did not amount to any thing. I am eager to see her. I hear from her twice a week. I will take her by surprise.

In Paris I stay at the Hotel Meurice opposite the Tulleries [sic] garden. It is a very elegant Hotel, quiet with best attention. I have been there since I came here alone. We always went in years past to the Hotel Bristol near Hotel Ritz but I could not teach my heart to go under present conditions.

Mary Miller is very happy that she is to see you again. I see them often. Give best regard to Tim and Lydia also remember me to dear Mrs and Mis Kohl. Ever Yours Sincerely

HOTEL MEURICE 228, RUE DE RIVOLI PARIS

Sept 23rd 1900

Mrs. Timothy Hopkins- Dearest May -

Your kind letter dated Sept 21st I found on my table on my return a few moments since from Church.

I am glad to hear you are benefited by the Cure. Also that dear Tim has taken the cure and derived benefit.

I shall be brief as the time for writing happens to be limited - as I have an engagement, I write now and not later because I am anxious to tell you of the sad news that came to me by Cablegram last week from my brother Charles telling of the death of Barbara Jordan on the 19th of Sept. the doctor had not yet arrived from his trip to Japan, but was expected the next day. What a distressing home coming for him and how fitful for both parents that at such a time they were so widely separated. Dear Mrs Jordan has had her Mother heart tried beyond all other [tr]ials that ever before has

cruel to her - the dear Doctor idolized this precious gift from God. I can only pray for them that Our Good Father who gave them their children will in His own way shed light peace, and resignation to His will.

I remain here 'till the 14th of Oct and then if I continue well, I start for Italy, staying a few weeks at the largest cities, going as far as Sorrento stopping a few days at Castellamare where I passed a week with my dear son in 1880. I will take a steamer from Naples to go to Alexandria en route to Egypt.

I have made two visits to the Exposition. I take it in small doses. There is much that is chaff that we can see in all Fairs. The Picture gallery has a Portrait of Queen Victoria that excells [sic] all else in the great collection. I hope you will try and see it.

Give my kind regards to Mrs. and Miss Kohl.

To Tim and Lydia my tender love - for yourself dear May the same love that I have felt for you.

Yours faithfully

Mrs. Leland Stanford

very severe cold and after that was better. took cold again by being out on the wet ground and had severe inflamation of the bladder. I am all right again and taking the waters. To morrow I will turn the key on my rooms here and go to Oberammergau for the Passion Play. I will go to Munich stay tomorrow night. The next day after four hours by rail reach Oberammergau. Will see the play Saturday and in this way celebrate my seventy second birthday. Have engaged seates [sic] for the 26th also thinking after the first days excitement was over I might enjoy the second day better. I return here the [fo]llowing Wednesday take up the

cure and remain two weeks longer. Going somewhere for the after cure.

Jennie is at the convent in Metz studying only music and french. In order to enter the Sacred Heart Convent at Paris Oct 3rd, her french will then allow her to go on in a class of girls her own age. I had a letter from her a few moments since. She sayes [sic] the soldiers and the military music she enjoys so much. The generals official residence is next to the Convent and they overlook the forts and military quarters. I will visit her there in Sept and take her to Paris with me Oct 1st. I should stay in Paris a month to visit the exposition as I have not seen it. I had a letter
