Santa Maria, Calif. May 20th 1889, Senator Leland Stanford, This morning, every member of my department, the highest in the town school pledged himself to work for money to carry him through the Stanford University. I write therefore to get directions for their preparation or if you have no course of study yet will you be kind enough to send an article to our state official organ, making our duty clear to teachers who would gladly help pupils, if we knew what to do. Hon Leland Stanford Dear Sir. I have returned from a visit to Los Gatos and a number of fruit farmers near the foot-hills in the district extending from Mountain View to Los Gatos, and I ws surprised to find so many-families

power to build such a [road?] but as I have a small [interest?] that would be greatly benefitted if the road should be built. I wish to express [this?] hope, which I have in common with so many others, that you will see [the?] feasibility of it, and [with?] your effort to secure it accomplishment. Very truly yours L.
