handed out tracts. She carried a portable record player and played records to spread the word to those who would listen. By now her daughters had bestowed on her the slightly cheeky but affectionate name of ''Clara''. She was often a difficult guest as she would arrive at her daughter Nancy's house without warning just on meal times and food had to be taken from each plate to giver her a meal. She annoyed her son-in-law, Hector Bull, with her talk and strained the patience of her small granddaughter, Jean, as she talked of her beliefs or, worse, handed over religious literature which was especially disappointing when such literature was given as a birthday gift.

In 1950 she wished to join a tour the Jehovah's Witnesses were taking to visit England and America. She sold her only asset, her home, to her granddaughter Audrey and Audrey's husband Ray Gendle, for just the amount she needed for her trip on condition that they provide a room for her for the rest of her life on her return. She had her trip and attended great rallies of Witnesses as well as doing the usual sight seeing. Not long after her return, Audrey and Ray, who needed bigger and newer premises, sold the house and Jane spent the next few years living with various Witness families in Fairfield.

As her long life stretched out she drew up a simple Will which left all her ''bits of bedroom furniture and contents to Edith Oakes'' (Allan's wife). Her daughter, Francis Leigh Bull, was appointed her executrix. In 1962 she wrote a note requesting that any money left after paying her funeral expenses should be divided between her two daughters.

She grew frailer and went to stay with her daughter, Wyn, who nursed her with great care and devotion. On 27 October 1963 she died and at her cremation a Theocratic Funeral Service was held for her according to her wishes. On that day her old house at Fairfield West was demolished.

These two very talented and capable people, Jane Peacock and Clifford Leigh Oakes, had difficult lives in which they worked hard and struggles to make ends meet and provide for their children. It is wonderful that Clifford, at least, received recognition for his achievements in the community in which he lived so long.

7.1.8 WILLIAM SHELLEY OAKES (1866-1912)

William, the eighth child of John and Elizabeth Oakes, was born on 2 December 1866 at Berrima. He married Kathleen Emily Burgess, eldest daughter of John Burgess, at Barcaldine on 22 August 1912, the ceremony performed by the Reverend Father P. Cornel. He, like his brother Clifford, seemed to spend much of his early life on the road. His mother wrote on 20 July 1909 that ''I heard from Willie this week, he is still on the line from Blackall to Jericho''. Later she wrote with evident pleasure when William came to visit his brother, Spencer, at Kelso: ''It is a great pleasure for me to see my Baby again, but he has grown so much since I last saw him I can hardly believe it is really Willie, he is stopping at Kelso, so I do not see very much of him. I do hope he may be able to get suitable work & not have to go so far away again, any way, while I live...''

William Oakes and his wife came to stay with his brother, Clifford Oakes and his family, at their house in Merrila Street, Burwood while he had an operation to remove a growth from his face. He did not survive the operation and died on 18 December 1912 only four months after his marriage and eight months after his mother died and is, like her, buried at Kelso. His widow survived him by many years.
