1799, August, 1, Thursday, Fair pleasant morning- A light rain afternoon warm & cloudy night. I was too unwell to go to Barbecue at Mr. Verdier's, took Jallap & Ipecac- J. Taylor called here in morning & got Office key- Ch'w Taylor called here returning from Barbecue- Told me he had purchased part of the articles I gave him mem'o & money for last Monday- he ret'd £4.11.3. to settle when the articles comes- Ch.Taylor jr was here with this father. Rec'd a letter from G.C. Taylor who continues ill2, Cloudy morn. James Taylor called this morning-to see how I was- I continue unwell & took salts- J. Taylor went on to Orange Springs- Sent Frank & Martin to McKinney's Mill w'th 6 bus Corn & got meal. Got some plump fine cherries from Morella tree. 3, Cloudy morn- Broken clouds & sunny afteroon. Reuben Taylor came & got me to write Adv't for Sale of Land &c. he went back before noon- C. Taylor called, had been to Fox to enquire if his goods were left there- they were not- he soon went home- Yager brought up part of the things. I sent to C. Taylor's & got-Rice, Wood-ware, paper,& Corks, F.S.T. sent- Also Sundry medicine C.T. bought 4, Sunday, Thin clouds in morning- A moderate rain about noon fell gently about 2 hours- The Hawk killed C. Taylor's Turkey Cock last night, crippled one Turkey hen & another missing- A Goose was killed 2 nights before. I had the Cock cooked. I hear Mrs Crutchfield sent last night for C. Taylor that he went early this morning to the Springs to see her, she being said to be very unwell. I staid at hone. 5, Great dew- Fair with Scattered clouds. Jas Taylor's Sawney came & got a Gammon bacon 10½ lb. said his mistress directed him- John Kinser got a Midling, 18 lb Bacon & paid 20/3 for it. Patrick Bell got a Shoulder & Midling 25 lb bacon and paid 26/3- 1/10½ due to be paid by Court. In evening a Mr Findley (of Augusta) called here to enquire if I had some Land in Jefferson County for sale- I told him I expect Co. James Taylor might- he went on. Finished weeding & hilling Corn yesterday. 6, Getting dry- Fair. Negroes weeding my & their potatoes &c. 7, J. Taylor was here, said Mrs Crutchfield was too ill to come from Springs, w'ch detains his family there. I walked to Court house & got Newspapers. 8, Thursday, Fair and dry. I was very unwell last night, high fever ad got very little sleep- Felt Chinches in bed. Had Bedsteads in my back room taken down, Scalded &c- Heard that Tho's Barbour & family came yesterday to J. Taylor their youngest child unwell- I was very unwell or wou'd have walked there. C. Taylor began to make Bricks for his chimneys yesterday- I sent Martin to assist. 9, Dry and clear-began to want rain. Sent M. Atkins & Essex to seek one of the young Oxen,a Young Steer & the Bull, they only saw the Bull, which they cou'd not get home- Reu. Taylor called here going to Richards Store, he returned & dined here. I am very unwell. J. Taylor called here after breakfast, going to the Springs, T. Barbour & family went down with him- he told me he left Mrs Crutchfield very ill yesterday & got C. Taylor to go there Last night- his wife still at Springs. I had part of Turnep patch weeded & seed sown in thin parts. J. Gibson Taylor, James Pendleton & James Barbour came here from School & went early next morning to go to Springs. 10, Hazy morning- A good moderate rain in the evening & a Slight Shower in night. The boys went before breakfast to J. Taylor's, said they intend to get breakfast at Springs. I continue unwell, my mouth sore inside- Had Flax laid in Meadow to dew rot. 11, Sunday, Thin clouds without rain-warm- I am rather better than have been for 3 or 4 days. Sent Frank & got Newspapers at post office, Also a letter about Fire Insurance &c. I walked to C. Taylor's-dined there- he returned in Evening from Hansbrough's & Rose Hill- Polly Taylor came from Capt Conway's
1799, August, 12, Come Clouds, warm, dry, no rain, some drops after dark. Began to tread out wheat. 1st C. Taylor dined here, we had good Watermelons &c. 13, A little hazy warm & dry. Trod wheat 2d Floor. I staid at home- Gibson Taylor bro't a Newspaper here, said T. Barbour's wife &c were home & his mother going to Springs- they came up yesterday. 14, Wednesday. Dry warm and fair. Trod 3d Bed Wheat. I walked after dinner to Court house, got Newspapers- paid 9d fro Postage Letter from Fire &c. A Sack Salt- & 2 Sides of Leather is at Mr. Shepherd's, bro't by Yager's Waggon- (The Leather appears sorry), D. Taylor bought for me- the Skillet did not come. Got my Bull home & put with Cows in pasture. 15, I was very unwell, fevers & sore mouth &c. Some clouds- a drop of rain- J. Taylor called here going to Springs, said he expected his family will remove home on Saturday. Reuben Taylor was here a little time, got Letter I bro't from P. Office went before noon. J.G. Taylor, Jas Pendleton & Jas Barbour came here from School & staid. C. Taylor & G.C. Taylor came here in evening from F. Walker's to day; Dined at Verdier's barbecue. I was so unwell I staid at home. Trod 4th bed Wheat &c. Sent Frank with Ox cart & got the Sack Salt and 2 Sides Leather from Mr. Shepherd's, the Leather weighed 22 lb. 16, Friday. Thin clouds-very dry. The Boys- vizt: J.G. Taylor, Jas Pendleton & Jas Barbour, went to school after breakfast & ret'd in evening. Ch Taylor jr came & got Cucumbers- G.C. Taylor went with him to C. Taylor's- Mr. O'Neil looking for G.C. Taylor, came here a little before noon. After dinner went to C. Taylor's. Trod 5th bed Wheat. Took out 30th Hhd Corn. G.C. Taylor returned in evening from C. Taylor's- Capt C. Conway's sons, Francis & John, came with him- Wm Drope also came here. 17 A good moderate rain fell last night, a little rain & broken clouds to-day. Sent Frank to McKinney's mill, he went from there to Dade's & Madison's & got meal at last place, 6 bus'. G.C. Taylor & Mr Conway's after breakfast went to Capt. Conway's- The other boys went to J. Taylor's, whose family, & T. Crutchfield &c got up from Springs. John Taylor & son Wm Gilbert, dined here. I had about 60 bushels Wheat cleaned & brought to the Granary- the rain prevented my cleaning more. 18, Sunday, Cloudy, some drops rain, but not sufficient to be serviceable. Reuben Taylor called here & went to Court house. Mr Colhoun preached- C. Taylor walked here. I went with him to J. Taylor's to dinner-Reu Taylor-R'd Noel & wife, T. Crutchfield & wife and boys there- I was unwell, sore mouth, griped &c. G.C. Taylor came here in evening. 19, Broken clouds & warm- a mist toward night. Had the Wheat (which was trod last night week) Cleaned & brought to gain room- about 190 bushels- Mrs Burnley sent old Louis for 8/- I owed her. I sent 9/-. Reuben Taylor & sons, Billey & Frank called here going to Barnett's ford- G.C. Taylor & I went there also. I went to Richard's Store (which is the greatest distance I have been from home this year) G.C.T- ret'd here at night. 20, Small rain in last night-tho' but little- rainy morning and continued all day brisk & moderate- the earth well wetted. G.C. Taylor went after breakfast to J. Taylor's & ret'd in evening. 21, Cloudy & moderate or fine rain last night & to day. G.C.T. went again to J. Taylor's & returned in evening. Turned Stock into Peach orchard, peaches but nearly. 22,Thursday, Continues cloudy with a little mist of rain some times,tho' very little G.C. Taylor went to J. Taylor's & returned in evening. C. Taylor came & dined here. Thompson Taylor & Ben Wilkinson got here soon after we dined & dined here- they are going to Kentucky- Bro'r James was over to see Thompson Taylor, to send a letter in morrow morning for Maj'r J. Taylor- Francis Conway jr came here in the evening- John Smith came & got a Writ of G.C.T. I paid him 9d for mending shoes. 23, Some broken clouds & Sunshine, very warm, growing weather. Thompson Taylor & Ben Wilkinson (who lives with him) set out after breakfast on their way to Kentucky
1799, August, 23, [Continued], G.C. Taylor & F. Conway went to Capt Conway's. Had Flax up & put in Cornhouse. Had part of dried Peas Gathered. 24, Fair except a few broken clouds- very warm. Began to Sow & plow in wheat. Had Bacon sunned. G.C.T. went to J.T's & ret'd in evening. C. Taylor sent & got 24 lb Hogs lard & borrowed half bottle Molasses. J. Taylor was here in evening- Cut Watermelon 20 lb. 25 Sunday, Fair except broken clouds- warm growing weather. I went with G.C. Taylor & dined at James Taylor's- Salley & Betsy Taylor- T. Crutchfield & wife were there. John Pendleton & family & James Bowie Pendleton came to J. Taylor's (from Culpeper) in evening. 26, Fair morn, a moderate shower of rain in evening. Sowing wheat 2 bushels- G.C.T. went by J. Taylor's to Court, ret'd at night. Reuben Taylor & son William called here. I rode with them to court. Paid Daniel Grinnan £31.10.9., for two judgments, McSmellie & Geo McCall & Co. vs Taylor's Executors and took his receipts Attested by A.Darby. 27, Cloudy morn. Patrick Bell came here & got 1 Gammon & 1 Shoulder bacon & 1 quart Whisky w'ch he promises to pay for in a week or two. G.C.T went to C. Taylor's to breakfast-from thence to Court. paid Paul Verdier 15/- my subscription for a Barbecue some time ago. Settled with G.L. Grasty for my taxes & Levies, he gave me a Receipt for their amount 12 dollars 67 Cents, for which I gave him an order on James Taylor. Let Mr. E. Hackley have a dollar to buy me ½ lb Tea. Mr. C.P. Howard & Mr_____Malcomb was here in evening & Eat Watermelons &c- they had been at Mrs Burnleys. Seeded 3 bushels Wheat. 28, Fair morn,a little fog. some broken clouds. Had 31st Hhd Corn taken out. Sowing Wheat- 3½ Bushels put in today. C. Taylor called here-About raising limestone- Eat Watermelon & went on- George got hammer in morning- One ____Moore, a young man applied for business- I dined & afterwards walked to Court house, got my Newspapers. 29, Cool morn, a little hazy- a few drops rain. Sowing wheat 3½. Sent 6 Bus Corn to Madison's Mill & got meal. G.C. Taylor went to J. Taylor's- from thence to C. Taylor's, where he dined- returned by here & went to John Daniels, A dance expected this evening. I went to J. Taylor's to dinner-J. Pendleton's wife, T. Crutchfield & wife, dined there. 30, Warm morning, a little hazy- Clear pleasant day. C. Taylor sent a got a Gammon Bacon 12 lb. Sowed 4 Bushels Wheat. Mr. Malcomb, John Taylor & wife, Rob't Taylor & wife, Mrs Howard, James Taylor, T. Crutchfield & G.C. Taylor dined here the latter came from Jno Daniels to day. Reuben Taylor came here after dinner he trimmed my hair. 31, Fair morning. Roger Bell came here to breakfast- G.C. Taylor made a verbal agreement with him about the Plantation & Crop where J. Taylor lives for the ensuing year- I did not hear the bargain- Took out 3½ Bushels Wheat to seed. G.C. Taylor went to C. Taylor's, intended to J. Taylor's to dine, came back & Wm Drope with him at night. Some of the boys came from J.T's & got Watermelons- Wm. Drope came to see G.C. Taylor & went to J. Taylor's- came back with G.C.T. in evening. Finished sowing &c the Middle field with Red Wheat 22½ Bushels nearly I fear sown too thin.
September, 1, Sunday, Fair with a few clouds, warm & getting dry. G.C. Taylor and Wm Drope & I went to J. Taylor's- Thos Barbour & family, John Pendleton's family, Reuben Taylor, T. Crutchfield & wife there. Rec'd half a pound Tea, which I gave E. Hackley a Dollar to buy for me at Fredericksburg-on tuesday last.
1799 September, 2, Monday, Cloudy warm Morning. Thunder in evening and a sprinkle of rain at night. Thos Crutchfield came by,and G.C. Taylor set out before breakfast with him, going down to Spots' a & Caroline- T. Barbour intended going but his son Wm's being ill prevented him. M. Atkins took out 3½ Bushels Red Wheat to sow in Barn field- I desired him to sow thicker than he did in the Middle field. Took out 32d Hhd Corn, had about a bar'l Shelled. 3, Cloudy and warm morning-some drops rain,before noon. 4 Bus' Wheat taken to sow. Had 22 Ganders, 12 Geese- er old Picked- got about 6 lb feathers- Pat helped to pick- There are 5 Goslings. 4, Cloudy-a good moderate rain in evening. I delivered p/r Roger Bell a Barrel Corn for George Con[way] Taylor- R. Bell got a Shoulder 13 lb Bacon for do Which he left here. Sowed 4 Bus Wheat. Reuben Taylorhad been to Goldesbys Store came by & borrowed a gourd drop-shot. Frank rode ny mare to Shepherd's & got her shod- bro't some Newspapers. 5, Thursday, Cloudy & fine rain or small through the day in showers- rained a good deal after dark. Too wet to plow or sow wheat. Had part of Hemp pulled up-and more the 6th and laid on clover- Left some seed hemp. 6, Cloudy & light showers thro' the day. I staid at hone. C. Taylor jr came over- he dined with me- He & 2 Negro boys carried each a Watermelon, returned in evening and carried 3 more- I never had Watermelons so plenty & good, as this season. Negroes about Hemp& making Shelter pen &c. 7, Rained last night & showers to day- clouds higher a a little sunhine afternoon- ground very wet. I have been very unwell for many weeks- rested poorly last night- took this morning 18 Grains Ipecac' and 30 grains Jallap- did not work very well. thought it relieved me a little- My negroes puting up rails for Fodder Shelter. In evening rothers James & Reuben rode here, they eat a good watermelon. Brother James mentioned Mr. Reynolds Chapman (who is recommended as fit to act as a Deputy Clerk) was at his house to day, went away & said shou'd return before Court. 8, Sunday, Cloudy, misty-sunshibe & little. Wet season since Wednesday last, I wrote a letter to G.C. Taylor about the young man who applied at J. Taylor's yesterday- Also wrote F.S. Taylor & sent both letters to post office. I walked to J. Taylor's- E. Pendleton & children, Tho's Barbour & family, T. Crutchfield & wife dined there- they spoke of coming to see me next Wednesday9, Rained last night a little,cloudy & rainy day. Heavy rain w'th thunder ab't 11 o'clock,broken clouds evening. Took out 33d Hhd corn. Let Malachi Atkins have ½ Bar'l Corn to send to Mill. John Martin jr came to enquire if I had bacon to sell. he went away before dinner & his father sent a Note by his son George & got 2 Shoulders & 1 Gammon 40 lb to be paid for in a month at 1/1 ½ p/r lb. J. Taylor sent tray of flour borrow'd last week. The large White Sow had a litter of 9 pigs and The Guinea Sow had 6 do. 10, Foggy morning- Warm fair day. M. Atkins got out 4 ½ Bus Wheat to sow. I staid at home- Killed a Squirrel & 9 doves. 11, Cloudy morning, Sunshine & broken clouds. Killed a Shoat, sent 2 quarters by George to W. Stewart 15 lb. M.Atkins took out 4 ½ Bus Wheat to sow. James Taylor & wife, John Pendleton & do. & daughter Caty, Thomas Barbour & wife & 4 youngest children, T. Crutchfield & wife & some of the children. 12, A little fog & clouds. M.Atkins took out 4Bus Wheat to sow. Roger Bell came herereceived the Shoulder of Bacon for G.C.Taylor left here the 4th instant. He also received 6 Bushels Wheat for G.C.T. to sow & begins to-day. I walked to Reuben Taylor's - Brother James & those who were here yesterday dined there I sent 6 Bushels corn & got ground at McKinney's13, Fair & very warm. Roger Bell sent my Cart (which he borrowed yesterday) By Negro Anthony & got 14 Bushels Wheat. M. Atkins took 4 ½ Bushels Wheat to sow. I bought a peck of Onions of Maj'r Moore's Joe & pd 1/6. Walked to J. Taylor's in evening, Mrs Bell, Chas Bel, & J.P. & family, T.B. & do. & T. Crutchfield & wife there. Roger Bell sent Antony & got ½ Bar'l Corn, at night
1799, September, 14, Fair and warm- one or two very light showers rain in evening. M. Atkins took 4½ Bus' Wheat to sow. Roger Bell sent Anthony with Cart and got for G.C. Taylor 9 Bus Wheat to sow. C. Taylor jr got a small bowl of butter,his father called here returning from a visit to Wm Gilbert who continues very ill at Aunt Taylor's. Aunt Taylor, Bro'r James's wife, Tho's Barbour's wife & Chas Taylor sent and got a Basket peaches each. _____Parr sent Julian King's son & got 2 lb Butter. I had to take it out of a pot & rec'd 2/6 for it. I went to C. Taylor's- Mrs Eliz'a Conway, her daughters Betsy & Sally, sons Francis and Henry, Harry Fitzhugh & wife, Lucy Fitzhugh, John Conway & Alice Thornton (a daughter Charles) dined there, Wm Gibson & boys-____Lumsdale & do, at C. Taylor's. 15, Sunday, Fair,warm. I was unwell and dined at home- J. Taylor with his two boys & J. Pendleton's three,was here in evening- out Watermelons. 16, Fair. M. Atkins took out 4½ Bus' Wheat to sow. J.Taylor sent a Dollar & got 6lb R. Bell sent Nelson & got 2 Bus Wheat. Took out 34 Hhd Corn. Wm Bowling was here wants employment as Overseer. 17, A little fog- Fair warm. I feel very uneasy in bowels. M. Atkins took about a bushel Early Wheat to sow on this side Drake's Branch & 2½ Bushels Common do making 42 Bus' in Barnfield & 22½ Bushels in middle field- ab't 1 Bus of it Early Roger Bell was here with Cart & got for G.C. Taylor a Shoulder Bacon 13 lb, ½ Barrel Corn & 9 Bushels wheat, making to this time, 26 lb Bacon, 2 Barl’s Corn & 40 Bushels Wheat. Finished sowing & putting in Wheat, 41 Bushels Red & 1 Bus Early- Sown in Barnfield & 22½ Bushels in middle field, Total sown 64½ Bushels Got done Sowing Wheat about 4 o'clock in evening. Began to pull blades in middle field- Patrick Bell send Aggy & got a quart Whisky. G.C. Taylor got here from Caroline in evening. 18, Rained a little last night- cloudy, rained in evening & night. J. Taylor came here to breakfast, returned after. G.C. Taylor went to Court house & returned here at night. Major John McKinney was here, said he wanted to buy Wheat. I did not bargain with him. Reuben Taylor called & returned shot for some borrowedC. Taylor sent Jeffery & got ½ Barrel Corn. 19, Thursday, Rainy morning- cleared by noon,cool evening. G.C. Taylor went before breakfast to C. Taylor's, thence to J. Taylor's & back at night. Took out 35th Hhd Corn, I went to J. Taylor's and dined there, G.C. Taylor, John Pendleton & family- T. Crutchfield & wife there. Mr Paul Verdier came to J. Taylor's for Hay and walked to my house, got 6 Gammons bacon 75 lb to pay for it at Court at 1/1½ p/r lb. Aunt Taylor sent Hannah & got a Basket Peaches. Pat from C. Taylor's got a basket of Peaches & candles of G.C. Taylor's- brought molasses for some borrowed. Roger Bell sent Anthony & got 1½ bus Corn for G.C.T. 20, Fair and pleasant. G.C. Taylor went to J. Taylor's to breakfast, returned here to dinner, went to C. Conway's in evening- J. Taylor, J. Pendleton, Thomas Crutchhfield & Reuben Taylor dined here- Doct'r Waford called here in vening, enquired for G.C. Taylor- said he was on his way to Wythe County. They sent from J. Taylor's & got a good many Peaches. Gathering my blades yesterday & to day in middle field. Had Leather coat & white apples gathered, about a Bushel of L coats, ½ Bushel white Apples. 21, Saturday, Some broken clouds- some sun and warm. J. Pendleton, T. Crutchfield & the boys walked by from J. Taylor's. I put some provision & a bottle Whisky with provision from J. Taylor's and walked with them to a Squirrel hunt & barbecue at the Spring where Hodge once lived- There was thirty or forty people and spent the day agreeably &c. My fodder blades cocked in middle field- and began to pull in barn field22, Fair (except a few broken clouds) and pleasant. I went to J. Taylor's to dinner. John Pendleton & family, T. Crutchfield & wife & Mrs Wm Daniel were there- G.C. Taylor came here from C. Conway's at night. --[SUNDAY]--
