Washington January 9th 1822

Sir

I presume before this time you have
seen Mr Hogg -- who was fully
authorised to settle, the judgment I had
confessed -- It was uncertain at what time
Robert Jones would go to Raleigh -- was my
reason for sending the note by Mr. Hogg.
It is certainly a very hard case upon me as the
administrator had not offsets -- and if I had
known it in time I should have made the proper
defence -- the County Court of Halifax
had adjourned earlier than was expected, that
Mr Burges might go to the assembly. I therefore
had no opportunity of seeing Mr Clark as he
had left town before my return. I presume
however that Robert Jones and another Endorser
will be considered good for tht sum --
