Tuesday Nov 4

The same -- General Election day -- Rose at 7 1/2 -- Went to Post Office & then took all my documents, tally lists etc down to the First Ward Polls in Eagle Hose house -- Sworn in & all in hand & soon started in -- Got along smoothly all day --Started in at 8 AM -- Recess at noon for an hour for lunch --Took lunch at Louis' I did -- At 6 PM polls closed & Sheriff would not allow us to leave, but had dinner brought to us from Louis' -- At 7:15 we commenced counting votes -- Polled 281 votes, but lost one somehow -- Had to give it up after counting 3 times -- Then we went to tallying -- Through one half at 2 oclock, when we quit for lunch which Schwin brought in -- Big crowd of lookers on all night -- Got along faster after lunch by adopting better system, counting the straights, as was right to have done in the commencement -- Lots of whisky and cigars all the time --

Wednesday Nov 5

The same -- Got through counting at daylight & crowd all left -- took till 9 to finish up sign seal & deliver box & all into hands of the County Treasurer, at the bank -- Then we visited the upper ward polls -- not through counting -- & didn't finish up till noon -- Found that $10 that Warner Hillyer owed me, left at the International bar -- Was about town most of the day -- lots of fighting among the drunks but nobody killed -- Telegrams coming in from the East -- Much excitement --
