Monday May 11

Cloudy, variable -- Evening 2 or 3 smart showers -- Hale & Norcross pump busted a week ago yesterday -- got it all right last 3 or 4 days -- Took train at 8 for oclock -- Bed at 3 -- This PM I wrote notice of a pretty little steam pressure indicator for attaching to boilers, to show what pressure of steam to the square inch is on the boiler, at any time -- George C Phillips of Silver City is the maker of it -- made it for his own use, as an improvement is two or three points over the previous styles -- He gave me $5 to make the item -- Worked late tonight -- Got off at 2 1/2 -- Was at Simon Fraser's saloon afterward awhile -- Bed at 4 --

Tuesday May 12

Cloudy & cooler -- blustering & very dusty -- Slept till nearly noon -- WW Hobart in town -- met him & we had good old chat together -- leaves for Carson tomorrow, & back to San Francisco, where he is Secy of Spring Valley Water Co - T R McGurn was attached for $300 this PM, and being afraid of other bouncings he sold everything to W J Hester. 3 grocery stores and a wood yard, personal property etc -- Evening McGurn sent for me & I went up to his rooms in the [Marge?] Building -- He told me the whole story, so I could write it up correctly -- Went to ball of Red men awhile, at Opera House -- Big party & very nice time -- Wrote it up & lots of other things -- Through at 2 -- Bed at 3 -- cold -- quite a sprinkle of snow at 7 PM --
