Clear & very warm -- About 78 deg -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2 -- Rec'd from the agent Vol 2 of the Personal Memoirs of US Grant $5 per volume -- Recd today the [plageolet?] from the house of Sherman Clay & Co -- It was a beautiful little instrument but an octave too high -- Enclosed it back to S G & Co -- telling them send me what I want -- Also read letter from Geo F King & Merrell, enclosing 10 cts worth of pens as sample -- Also copy of NY Tribune Almanac I sent for -- Bed at 2:30 [phrase erased]

Same -- 80 deg in shade as usual -- I slept till 11:30 AM -- [phrase erased] washed up dishes etc -- Bed at 2 -- worn out -- [Bowels not feeling right yet -- this phrase was erased]
