Clear & pleasant -- Went to Reno -- Met John W Mackay at Carson on way to Va by up train -- from San F -- train delayed short time -- about 1/2 hour in coming over the Sierra, by wet track, & rain & hail -- after dinner went over to Lindsay's with my 4 children -- The L's gone [???] Lake Tahoe -- Millie there sick with nervous rheumatism & mother attending her -- Been sick nearly a week -- Evening gave Bessie & Sam lesson on the banjo -- Bed at 9 --

AM clear -- Va on time at 10 -- Work as usual -- Bed 3 -- PM one or two heavy showers --

Tuesday July 20

Clear & pleasant -- made a new calico necktie -- Bed at 3 --

Clear & pleasant -- Fine day -- My 57th birthday -- 57 years old today -- It passed off without any extra event worth mentioning -- Bed at 3 -- When I was at Reno, Sunday, got copy of Memorial and Rock, Charley's paper, Plymouth Mass, dated July 8, in which was quarter column item of death of my old boyhood's friend, George F. Cobb - Died at his house in Baltimore June 29th -- disease of the kidneys, from which he had long suffered -- About 56 years old -- leaves wife and I think, 1 or 2 children -- Good Bye George -- This another tie is broken -- That has bound me to old home. Put up 1 gallon of fresh tomatoes today, in one of the glass gars I got of Chubbuck --
