commences next Monday -- was about town until 5:20 PM when I took train for Va -- Evening about town -- Bed at [?] Cassidy is up from San Francisco to "[shy?] his castor into the ring" as candidate for US Senator from Nevada in place of Fair at a meeting on Tuesday evening next at Pipers Opera House -- It is now decided to shut down the Combination shaft entirely, therefore the regular main shafts of the Savage, Hale & Norcross and Chollar are being put into working order for work separately hereafter -- The Combination shaft is 3260 feet from top to bottom of shaft -- But the top being graded below the real surface of the hill, the shaft is actually nearly or quite 3300 ft deep --
