Sir:- Doubtless you are receiving a
number of letters threatening you for
your action in the Hillstrom case.
It is only fair that you should receive
some in commendation of
your stand. It has always been a
mystery to me how executives could
conscientiously set at naught the
laborriously obtained verdicts of courts,
by arbitrarily commutting the sentences
imposed by them. You deserve especial credit for your resolute
stand, not only against threats of a
personal character, but also of a political
nature. May the number of such
executives increase! We need them,
particularly at a time when the American nation must resolutely set itself
to the task of preparing for its defense
