August Friday 26 1904

Weather fine & cool.

Went to Tilbury Docks with following luggage which I saw on board Steamer "Arcadia" sailing for Port Said this day.

1 trunk F.A.N. put in hold 1 leather trunk H.C.B. put in hold 1 wicker tea basket in cabin 1 tin trunk with Engineering implements in baggage room 1 cartridge case leather in baggage room 1 tri-pod in baggage room

Impressed with Oriental aspect of things - coolie crew.

Returned to London in afternoon. Dined with B at Grand. Wrote letters. Got on interesting topics of conversation with B and talked in room until 12 o'clock, before retiring.

August Saturday 27 1904

Weather fine - warmer - sun actually shined with a really blue sky.

Dr. Littmann arrived from Germany about 9 o'clock. Talked matters over with him & B then got watches from Amer. Waltham Watch Co., returned to Hotel lunched at Grand with B. & L. went from there to British Museum with them. Looked over their catalogue of maps with care, selected some that seemed to cover the ground in Syria, found nothing better than I possessed, and returned to hotel to write this. Dr. L. & B. & I dined at Simpsons and afterwards talked over plans etc.

August Tuesday 30 1904

Weather fine but quite warm.

Left London at 10 A.M. for Paris via New Hanover-Dieppe. Good channel crossing - calm water. Good steamer very fast, makes 21 knots per hour. Distance from N.H. to Dieppe 72 miles. On arrival at Dieppe saw a young English girl remarkably pretty well worth remembering. Arrived in Paris about 7:15 no trouble with customs. Drove to Hotel Castiglione but they had no rooms & so sent me to Hotel Metropolitaine, 13 Rue Cambon & I found it to be a nice, quite, clean place with most of the servants English speaking. Can recommend it. A note from Dr. Hooker was waiting for me at Hotel Castiglione & so after washing up & dressing I called on him at Hotel Oxford at Cambridge. Found him in and with his friend Mr. Howells of N.Y., an architect. Spent the evening until about 11 o'clock talking matters over and then to bed.
