[Left page] Simple Earths There are nine earths [vis?] silica alumina, zirconia, glucina, yttria barytes, lime, and magnesia, Silica white, inodorous, insipid, insoluble in water and every acid except the fluoric and [infusible?] feels gritty between the teeth, Humina or pure Clay soft to the touch adhesive to the tongue; emits a peculiar odor when moistened. White will [dilute?] with most acids Lorcon glucina yttria are so scarce or scarcely to be mostly of notice here They are all white and unite with most acids.

[Right page] Mineral Spring While excavating the earth in the [Louisrill?] of Portland Canal about 9 feet above the rock a spring was discovered which had a peculiar taste and bubbles of an inflammable gas was now and then raising through it. This gas was flammable by the decaying evitable matter which is found in the [allurial?] for when they came to the rock this gas disappeared was not seen; but the spring still had it peculiar taste which was ascribed to different ingrediances [ingrediants] by different persons I have mad [made] the following experiments Experiment 1. Structure of [galls?] immedi ately changes it purple and then black. Nitrate of Silver produces an immediate sohite cloud and precipitate.

[Left page] 3 Paper [storied?] with termuric [turmeric] was not altered in color by this water 4 Nitrate of Silver when a few drops of this solution are poured into the water, an immediate white cloud is perceived which after standing for some time, change to a light purple color 5 Acetate of Lead, when droped [dropped] into this water produces an immediate white cloud and precipitate. 6 Sulphuric acid When poured into this water produces a slight effervescence. 7 Carbonate of potash of ammonia and Water of ammonia all produce a reddish Brown precipitate.

[Right page] Examination after it had [been bald?] 1 Nitrate of silver colored red 2 Structure of galls caused an immediate [ghite?] precipitate. 3 [Tumaric?] paper was not Changed 4 Oxodic acid Sulphate of Barites 1 Oxygen, 2 Chlorine, 3 Iodine, 4 Fluorine 5 Hydrogen, 6 Phosphorus, 7 Sulphur of Carbon [mettles?] of the lower lines of substances, combine with the upper, when their temperature is raised to a certain degree, and produces the phenomena of combustion;
