has some very fine buildings, chiefly of stone, and brick.
It has many churches. St. James' Cathedral is a very fine
structure. Every house has Venetian blinds. Most of the
streets have trees the road, and the wooden causeway
there is very little pavement. The causeway is chiefly of wood.
I like it better than pavement. Toronto is very well
built, and the streets are long and wide and straight.
Sixteen years ago its inhabitants were about four thousand
now it has seventy thousand, and is a very prosperous
town, I should say city. To-morrow I shall not be as I
have been the last two Sundays "Rocked in the Cradle of the
deep," but I shall go to the Cathedral. There are some
beautiful shops in Toronto. To-day I have found out where
I can get good draught ale, at one shilling per gallon
I had a glass with my dinner to-day. Bass' bitter ale
is sent out from England, and sells here for ½ dollar
that is two shillings per pint bottle. I must now say
good night. I can't realize the fact I am so far away
from you all. I have my desk up here, and am
writing comfortably. I have just taken out all the
Photographs, not excepting Terras', and wished you
all good night, then I put you all back again. I
have called at the Post Office, Toronto, to see if there
