in ruining the rich, many of them without a cause [illegible] are exiled, where some are put to death and others imprisonment with common criminals are the subject of mockery of the street boys who laughing tell them "tomorrow you will die hung [by one by?]" No man is permitted to leave Constantinople under any circumstances & they are daily [menaced] to be obliged to [evacuate?] the city not knowing for what destination & for what purpose. (Enclosed an article) Sir you are the only person in the world who could now try & put a stop to these horrors. Excuse the liberty I have taken. I am myself an Armenian. Sadly born in Constantinople & educated in the American College for Girls we owe so much to our dear College— & love it so. So it [not?] natural in these hours of anguish we should look up to you

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your note of October 18th, enclosing a letter from the Mayor of Cleveland referring to a proposed meeting in Cleveland to protest against the Turkish atrocities against the Armenians.

A copy of the Department's reply to Mayor Baker is herewith enclosed.
