2 May 1864. Planted cotton, Irish potatoes, watermelon, pumpkin, simbling seed, etc. & broomcorn. Halling out manure on lot. Collering new ground piney Delvd Mr. Pringle pork & no. 4o [unclear] Very severe wind here this evening not much rain yet 4 o'clock

6 May 1864 Claiborne came home & Bill last night - about dark 4th from working on the breast works Richmd & Danville finished halling out maure & coller piny field new ground yesterday This morning scattering manure & fixing to plant susan cane seed peas & corn on Sat.

12th. Hester had a mule mare colt Forest Jack the 7th May 1864. We sowed oats on creek yesterday Hilling 2nd years ground. Rained smartly this morning, ground too wet to go on sowing —

11th. They have been fighting on the Rapidan & Fredg & all about Richmond for for [sic] about 10 days & still at it. We are hilling & collering new & fresh ground, _ it has rained some nearly every day since the began to fight

1864 May 18. Got a letter from Jerry dated 8th. Commencing fighting Richard Whitehead wounded 6th & hear from a letter John Powers wrote Jerry & Echols was taken some where as prisoners — Rained today.

19. Planting new ground & fresh ground corn to day & finished Planting Peas & Snaps, Pumpkin seed & simblings Began to Plow in Corn to day

23. Began to weed corn this morning weed out Irish Potatoes, Plowing Corn

26. Been to Lynchg, gloomy times there Stores nearly all shut up & men in Camp. Rained while I was gone.

27 weeding corn & going to sew oats on Creek again this evening. Sewing Oats on Creek weeding. Sheared Sheep this day 28 old ones. Cut 7 Ram Lambs Turn out 1 Rams & marked 8 Ewe Lambs Bybee marked & cut them - nearly finished sewing oats to day Rained yesterday & Hailed some — cut & spayed 5 Hogs here some one stole 3 shoats we have in pen 2 & Henry one 1 5 old Hogs, 1 Boar, 4 sows, 3 shoats & 7 Pigs & at Plantation 17 stock Hogs, shoats 4 sows & 12 Head Cattle & calves & 4 steers.

& 4 mules with Colts - & here we have 3 Cows, 1 Bull, 3 Calves or yearlings & 2 steers, 2 Plow Horses my mule I ride & Hester & her colt.

28th. Fine morning finishing sewing Oats on Creek. I am Sick this morning. Sent 1 Bbl corn to turn for meal. Weeding Corn to day Let Jordan have 40 lb. Bacon for them all at Plantation to last till 1st July next — Rained this evening quite hard cockling Wheat making Brooms etc.

30th. Sheared sheep here today. I am still complaining Plowing & weed Corn, Cotton & Irish & Sweet Potatoes. Let Henry Lila Claiborne little Henry Jerry Smith & Milly Ann have have 40 lb Bacon to last till after 1st July.

31st. Cannons distinctly heard 30th here. Weeding & working Collard Potatoes etc

June 1st. Finished weeding Pot[a]toes Cottone & Plowing & weeding corn, clear fine day Yesterday & to day & day before yesterday Cannons firing very much

1864 June 2nd. I went to CH after Tax accts & did not get from 2 [master?] Rained this day.

3 June. Rained again. Finished striping here & at aspen Grove to day Thinning Corn & drawing Tobacco plants Halled some wood this morning.

4th June. Rained nearly all day. Planted some Tobacco — Henrys yetsick Henry been sick since Thursday.

6 Finished planting Tobacco, Bushing Oats this evening Smith Plowing — clear pretty day. Sent to the wounded soldiers In Lynchg by Jas M Harris 1 peck Black Peas, 1 Doz onions, 1 Doz Eggs & over 1 lb Butter, -

7 Finished planting Tobacco, replanted new ground piny field. Plowing & weeding corn, Sent to Mr Glenn this morning after nannie Basket etc & sent her Collard plants

8 Plowing & weeding out Lot sorgum 9 Do Do Some body broke in our Dug under our smoke house & got most ½ the meat we had about 1 Bus flour corn meal & some salt

10th Thursday night or Friday morning my meat etc stolen. Plowing & weeding corn in thats chicked

12th Planted our corn in fresh ground where it has been so wet. Plowing & weeding corn Bushed oats

14 & 15 Many sick & wounded soldiers came in here to something to eat I went to see Mr. Hunts children going to school to Mrs [Nellie?] Haley & Capt Haley & myself refers the price for Board to Mr N.C. Miller and Mr Pannill Wm L or Doct John Robertson clear pretty day 15th, Sent for Fannie & Edd to day

15. sent Capt Fitzgerald by Henry $10 paid me too much for Fannie 1863 he pd 10$ too much which I handed back at his House & still there as $10.

19 Sent Henry again after Fannie & Ed, about a week ago some one broke in my smoke House & took out about 20 Hams, of Bacon done by Mr. Keens Anderson & Lewis & some one Broke the Lock at Mr Hunt's place & stole all the Bacon they had
