Philip A Embury Journal #3

Journal #3 dated November 18, 1917 - August 16, 1918. Philip Embury (1891-1940) was born and raised in Berkeley, California, and attended the University of California. Early in the spring of 1917 he embarked with the University of California contingent of volunteers for the American Field Service and served on the Western front in France. After the United States entered the war, Embury attained a commission in the United States Army Air Service and trained as a pilot. He served in the 141st Aero Squadron with distinction and repatriated in 1919.

fourty miles. As we were finding out this information from the Chef de Militaire there was a freight train pulling through the station. We asked him if the freight went to Charmont. He said yes, but that we were not allowed to ride on it. We asked him a couple of times if it went to Charmont to make sure, and then ran out of his office with him following us and hollering defendu, defendu at us. to keep down out of sight when we went through stations to keep away from the military police. At Charmont we got into a first class car and made Neuve Chateau O.K., but had several narrow escapes from the U.S. M.P.'s who wanted to see our traveling orders. One time Stewart had to act as an officer to get Frost by, as he was dressed in his ishue uniform and the rest of us were dressed up. That was once when good clothes saved us. Another time an M.P.

wanted to see our orders and we kept him busy talking about a regiment of nigers that were camped there until the train pulled out.

We passed the new U.S. hospital train that was on a siding. It certainly is a dandy looking train. Some different from the French hospital trains.

We caught up to our fellows at Neuve Chateau. Got in there just ten minutes after they did.

Went up town and had a good meal. Looked around the town until 4:30 when we pulled out.

Got into Gondrecourt at 6:30, and by the time we got to camp it was too late to get anything to eat. Only one meal today.

Saturday Apr. 27 '18. Drew our guns, helmets, and belts. --- Went over thw Monty to the flying field this afternoon. Didn't get a ride, --- Met Bob Blake down town in the morning and dinner with him after I git back from Monty this evening. Bob and I went over to the artillery school and spent a very pleasant evening with Clare Torey.

Sunday, April 28 '18. Bummed around camp all day.

Started school. Had a hours drill and games from eight until nine. At our classes I tried to remember so much that my head felt that it would split. -- We have three days on the Lewis gun then exes. It seems as if it would take me a year to learn all that we will have to learn int the next two days. Went over and worked on the gun a little this evening.

Tuesday Apr. 30. Had muster roll and signed the pay roll this noon. Was sick during the night. Went on sick report this morning. Went to school
