24th March 1856 Given Fed Henry Jordan & Sandy some flour this morning — Went to Mrs Hunts & meeting House yesterday Striped tobacco all day Saturday not Rolled Logs yet nor finished sewing Oats – My wife went to Mrs Hunts yesterday,very windy to day. I went to Mr John D Hunts to day

25 March Rolled Our Logs & sent to Yates Mill 3 Bags Corn for meal carried 1 Log for Garden Paling & brot home 2 Bags meal & Garden Palings – windy day & moderate

26 Beautiful morning Halled up stack Oats to sew Sandy & Lowry Plowing in Oats Fed & Claiborne malling Balance fencing where wind blew it down yesterday, - let Mr Mr Lewis have 1 Bushel Oats Sallie started to school this 16th March 1856

27 Finished sewing Oats Sewed about 55 Bushels

28th Sewed flax Patch Plowing for Corn - Halling leaves out of new ground on Land Corn Began to Colter in fresh ground, Swingled flax this morning,- Clary Had a Heifer calfvery windy cool & dry weather yesterday we had a light fall of snow & very windy - all day Blowed down fencing again — we have only 4 Lambs to this day — —

29th Plowing for Corn Halling wood getting leaves for corn corn field etc Finished Raking new ground Coltering in Fresh ground fixing Barns there etc

30 Went to Mrs Moseleys Funeral Sermon Preached at Strait Stone Church by Elder Burton from Charlotte cty Va from 14 Chapter Revelations & 1 Verse Beautiful day little cool Hymns Sunday at her Funeral Virginia Selection 484th 476th 467th Hymns Solemn day -

31st cleaning up & Halling from Ground Henry shilings shingles Plowing for Corn My wife gone Mrs Hunts Beatifull day little cool & very [water stain]

April 1st Began to Hill to day Halling [water stain] Henry getting shingles sent Lowry [water stain]

31st augt 1856 Fanny White came here & Kate & her children gone to Capt Fitzgeralds to day Rained & they stayed all night –

Sept 1st 1856 Rained all night quite cool Kate has not come home yet doing but little this morning raining Fed & mendingshoemaking balance shelling Corn & spining Henry in shop about wheels etc

2nd Fair this morning & we are putting up & framing top of it Mr Wyatt came this morning, succoring & worming over tobacco to day - Kate card Fan =nies children home this evening, very cool Fannies Eliza sick at this time, - Nannie teeth & Jaws very sore & rising I am afraid,

=3rd Halled Logs etc for Barn put top on finished putting up Logs wyatt & Henry at work on barn pulling fodder till 12 oclock, clear day

4th Wyatt & Henry at work on Barn pulling fodder worming & succoring branch & new ground Tobacco to day & then we will daub & chink Barns to day — Jacob gone to Fannies to carry Kate to school Start Tomorrow morning morning gave her $45 started from here to day after 12 oclock on Thursday = clear pretty day —

5 wormed & succoring Tobacco till 12 oclock Then stacking Blade fodder & tying up till night put up 2 Stacks to day Henry & sandy been with Mr Wyatt at work on Barn got the top ready to raise

6th Put Top on Barn next to Mr Crews worming & succoring there — Halling up shingles wyatt stoped at 12 oclock gathering & stacking fodder on Path

12th Oct 1856 Halled up & shucked out corn at mountain fine clear weather

13th Sent waggon & cart, Twice to Dews saw mill to day 2 log for Joist for Porch 16- 2 Do 14 or 15. for Sheeting - Sent 2 Turns Corn for meal, clear day Toping succors for to Cut. gathering peas etc Snaps seed etc etc adams & Jacob gone to Harmony to Barbacue load for 2 Logs Cart carried etc brot back sheeting last,

14 Raining this morning we put our little Tobacco in Barn a little before day fired all the tobacco Barns & then shoemaking Making Brooms basket etc etc making Gate from 12 oclock till night we shelled some corn & Kitty spining etc etc – Very cool & windy Rained all day & still continues to night. Jacob making himself a pair of shoes himself, cold weather

15. Rained & snowed last night, quite cold Snow light, Raining a little this morning Shoemaking spining etc etc Halled up stack old oats & only 1 Load wood, I went to Riceville Rained a little & quite cold all day – =Give Sandy & Clem Blankets to day & Kitty Abram Lowry & Claiborne & Lila Blanket to day

16 Kitty & alse spining Sandy & Fed Shoemaking & mending Henry sick overseer went to new Barn & worked awhile & it commenced raining again & he went back to shop to work on Gate pt of 3 days this week, I went to see capt Gilbert, he is sick - rough week & very cool -

17th This day rained nearly all day shoemaking & mending spining & worked some in shop very Cold Rain disagreeable time, - - - - -

21st went to Court yesterday began to Sew wheat, cutting down corn, Wyatt at work on Barn Me Mr Adams my overseer has parted this morning I give him 2 mos wages & 2 Bushels corn & we are off as he don't suit suit me

23rd I moved Mr. Adams this day & took nearly all Balance sawing shingles Blocks & hanging Succors & Sandy & wyatt at work on Barn

24th Sawing shingle Blocks Sewing wheat Sandy & Mr Wyatt at work on Barn balance cutting down & shucking corn the 21st this months I agreed to give him at the rates of $80 pr year for him to atten[d] closely to the hands —like for rain

25 Sewing fresh ground in wheat next to Johns Spring, cutting down & stacking corn next to orchard halled up Load corn for Hogs & then Halling wood etc

26th I started for the fair at Richmond this morning & arrived at Mr Overbys left my horse & started 27th for Richmond where I arrived Just before night stayed in Richmond that —

28 In Richmond at Fair grounds --

29th In Richmond at Do said to be near Poeple 15,000 at night about started for Orange & Green got to Gordonsville at 12 that night

30 Hired horse at $1 pr day went to see Cousin Charles Graves found him sick went from there to James W Graves & found him Just alive, went from there to Bro Johns stayed night that

31 Returned to James - went to see cousin charles & went to Gordonsville that night. —

Novr 1st started from Gordonsville at 12 Oclock & arrived in Richmond at 4 Oclock in morning stayed in Richmond at James Hunts & uncle Crenshaws till Monday morning & then started for home got to Mr Overbys 12 Oclo[ck] got my horse went to Mr McCullocks that night

1856 Monday 3rd Rained as hard as I ever I saw it but Once in my life stayed & Tuesday Election day it Rained in morning I arrived at strait stone by 12 Oclock acted as Commissioner & then got home by night in the rain found all well at home Thanks be to God

4th Election over at S.S. F. & A J D 22 Buchannon & B. 50 — Worked done in the above time

27th Faned out wheat Fed & Sandy fired Toba the rest commenced working on Ice pond pomd Henry Jordan & Lowry Plowing - Henry got out Guano & wheat say

28th Fed etc opening Drains, claiborne etc Picking out cotton —

29th Fed etc Grubing in new ground Henry & Plowing finished picking cotton

30 Lowry etc Plowing Jordan gone to Mill finished sewing other Johns Branch alse etc grubing claiborne etc cutting

31 Fed etc grubing Jacob etc cutting Henry etc Plowing — Wyatt & Sandy getting Shingles all the week Henry Sewing wheat sawing etc — this evening

Novr 1st Henry Jordan etc Plowing balance Corn, Halled Load corn shucked it out & put it Halled wheat etc —

2 Sunday Pleasant day

3. Shoemaking making Brooms etc etc

4 Striping Jacobs Tobacco - etc -

5 Cutting & Grubing in new grounds Shoemaking Mr wyatt getting shingles with Henry. Cleared of[f] very cold this morning ground very wet
