Got off at 3 P.M. -- Herb and I went over and had supper with Clare Lorey. Took in the movies at the Officer's Y.M. when we got back. -- Wish that I would get some mail.

Sunday March 5, '18. Went down town with Lt. Springer. Saw Ruben Sebastion. He is a 2nd Lt. in Chemestry dept. He wants me to take dinner with him. Went down town again in the evening with Lt. Springer and Herb, and had a very enjoyable evening at the Officer's Cafe.

Shot a low score on the range, Vickers 74, and Lewis 28. Am glad I didn't have a bet up with Pery today.

Saturday May 11 '18.

Had examinations on the Vickers gun in the morning. Out of a possible 500 I got 497. Got lots of mail at noon. Started on the map course in the afternoon.

Sunday May 12, '18.

Went down to the station to see Lt. Springer off. Wish that I could have gone with him. Sent a birthday telegram to Hazel. Rained all day. Wrote letters. Monday May 13 '18. Went on the range and shot at moving targets. Got a score of 50 on the Vickers

Rained all day. Played quoits with Frank Grady in the Y.M. for five francs a game. I won ten francs from Frank, but lost it and five more to Tony Manley.

Monday May 27 '18.

At last our baggage has arrived. We leave in the morning. Grady and I spent the afternoon rolling dice with two girls at the Hotel Commerce Cafe. Put in the evening playing chess with Lt. Springer.

Left St. Maxient at 8:30 Had some farewell drinks with the boys, that are going to Voves instead of Tours. They leave tonight. They gave us a fine send off. We stayed in

Friday March [corrected to May] 3, 1918.

Continued on the pistol in the morning. Went out on the range in the afternoon and shot the pistol. Our squad put up a purse of fourty francs fore the first, second, and third man of 25, 10, & 5 francs. I got second money with a score of 13. First money was won by a score of 16.

Band concert in the evening. Lee Emery fainted in formation this morning.

Had examination on the opperation of The Lewis gun. Got by O.K.

Was overjoyed when I got back to the barracks at noon and found three lettes from Hazel, one from Steve, one from Mrs. Wood & Miss Gordon. First mail in three weeks. I stood in the mess line when I read Hazel's letter in answer to my March 1st letter. Was ovejoyed and excited to say the least. It certainly brought my spirits up one thousand per cent. Went on the machine gun range in the afternoon. Lay on the ground and read Hazels letter over again while the other boys were running the machine guns. I shot the highest score of our squad of ten. Got a score of 147 out of a possible 200, 75 on the Vickers and 72 on The Lewis. Won 25 francs for having highest score. Found out that we are going
