U.S. GRANT HOTEL EUROPEAN PLAN

SAN DIEGO, CAL.

April 19, '20.

Dear Sweet heart,

I arrived here about five this morning. I left L.A. at midnight. I had a good trip down from the city but it was pretty tiresome. I reached L.A. about 8:45 Saturday morning and was met by Sorine, Harry and Elsie. Then we proceeded to Long Beach and had some thing to eat. In the after noon Harry showed me all through the S.W. Ship yards and it certainly is a fine plant. I may take a notion and go to work down here for Harry. Do you think you would like to come down here and settle down?

We spent all of Sunday riding around in the machine, we visited many points of interest and several of the beaches. Saw Culver City the home of all the movie studios and Santa Monica, Glendale and a couple of parks

Aunt E. wrote she would wait for J. unless the weather got too severe. Aunt Rebecca who passed through here going to Santa Monica wrote of having seen Effie & how much they all seemed to love you & Dick and all you boys - but spoke particularly of how fond they were of you [underlined] Which is very nice to hear. Is it not?

If you meet Miss Kew or D – don't talk as though Dick were smitten [underlined] with Miss D. He seems to admire them both so much it is difficult to know which one he really does [underlined] admire the most

nor talk too fully of private affairs – with Henry Culloden & Effiel V. Culloden it is different. Effie has always been such a good kind friend to you [underlined] that I should not hesitate to tell her anything [double underlined] almost –

Give our love to them all if you do go up dear & to poor Emily Suisabaugh, who has had so much trouble in the loss of her husband. You should see her if you can _ but you won't have much time I know. I wish you had time to come up here! but suppose [undrlined] it is out of the question.

The aunt & cousins I speak of are spending the winter at Santa Monica. & Jain Vredenberg's Mother & sister are with them too I believe from

the truth, to cheer you – It does us good to hear that we are beloved, you know. Your Aunt Rebecca who is spending the winter with Kate at Santa Monica, told me how fond Henry & Effie are of you. She sees them quite often & likes them.

I cannot think of anything to tell you except that we are well and have managed to survive the cold of which we are having a goodly share. Tomorrow will be a bank holiday so I hope Harold will be at home & can go skating which he cannot very often Fred's duties never relax enough for him to

take you Sunday morning to Santa Monica to see your Aunt Rebecca Matheson and the Vredenburghs, as all of them had asked me very particularly not to let you escape again without their seeing you.

Jim Vredenburgh left for New Jersey last Thursday where he has gone to take charge of a farm that his mother has just given him. It has been owned by some of the Vredenburgh family for gen-
