ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS "With the Colors"

Los Angeles July 31 1918

Dear Ma

Did not write sooner and thank you for the fruit as I was waiting for the letter. It arrived in O.K. condition and did not take long to put it away.

I thought I would get home for a few days this Friday but they only shifted five crews out of six and they go from San Francisco to the Philippines. So they sent our crew of eight men and about 150 other sailers from different companies Monday to Los Angeles. We are stationed at Exposition Park. The war department is showing an exhibit on war trophies they have captured. There are so many of them it nearly takes up a square mile. This park is were all the millionaires live and right in the middle there is an National Guard Armory theres were we stay. The army is feeding me now it is not near as good as the navy gives you. They have a big sign up for the people to read the way they eat over there

bunch in each hand.

This is our tenth day out of Honolulu and expect to land at Yokahoma to morrow evening or early the next morning.

I don't think we will stay there more than a half of day. But another sailor and my self are going to Tokio when we land it is about an hours ride from Yokahoma.

We make two stops in China and won't get to the Philippines till about the tenth of the month

When we were two days out of Honolulu we had a storm and nearly every one was sea sick It hit me early in the morning so I did not eat that day and after I vomited a few times I felt fine again.

I don't know if you could make out that last letter as I had to turn it over before I had it half written. This letter I will mail in Japan and try and tell you all a little about what I will see there.

Will send two small photos of Honolulu one is the Y.M.C.A the other is at the beach of Waikiki. If I get any pictures of place we stop a in Japan I will send them along.

Will be glad when we hit the Philippines because this been a Chinese ship every thing else is Chinese about it. We can not hardly eat the meals. They cook. You can't imagine how a mothers home cooked meal would be to us now. Say for instance

Dear Ma

We are having a little vacation in a deserted part of the Philippines. When we landed at Cavite they thought we needed a rest I guess. So they send all the sailors and marines here. It is like a millionaires home in the States all beautiful gardens and building but that has nothing to do with our stomachs. We don't get half enough to eat mor go around all day talking about things we used to get. Yesterday we all got vaccinated. I don't think we will stay here more than ten days. This is the fourth day all ready.

My first watch was from 3:30 a.m. till 7:30 a.m. Nice walking with that gun on your back at that time, and that nice cool air.

We sleep in tents and the cool airs bother us again. I dont no how long this will last but as long as it does I won't be able to come home as we only get 24 hours liberty ever five days. I got my liberty to day and am over in Vallejo now. Some town all right.

Tell Dad I got the candy yesterday afternoon and it was swell, have not received the other mail from the Philippines. There is not much more to write about so I think I will end and look around the big town some more. Hoping everyone is well.

With love to all Ramon
