Grub and I finished up our air work this morning. He beat me through by about half an hour. It was so late I didn't expect that he would want to go on cross country until after dinner, but he ran off and got a machine. I looked for him at lunch as some of his flying clothes were hanging up at the foot of his bunk, so I thought that he hadn't gone. I waited a while then went into dinner. After dinner some one came in and said, Did you hear bout Clover, he got picked off at Romo. I didn't believe it for a while but I went over to headquarters and found out that it was true. It was an awful blow to me as I thought the world of Gruby. I put in the whole afternoon making an inventory of his things and packing them. Took them to the main camp in the evening and made arrangements for the funeral. Got Dr. Dean of the Y.M.C.A. to officiate. And through Dr. Dean I got word to Mr. S. T. Sheets, Grub's brother-in-law in Paris.

I was the officer of the day for the funeral and I held it up for a half hour
