Gentlemen: Your committee on Judiciary and Legislation to whom was referred the petition of Mary Costello, praying for a return of a portion of the taxes of 1884, assessed against the petitioner, find the facts as stated in this petition, but in view of the large number of similar cases in the city assessment list for 1884, your committee beg to report the petition back to your honorable body without recommendation.

463 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE May 2/84 Be it remembered that on this the 2d day of May 1884 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to law. The following officers are present, towit: his honor the mayor H.G. Struve and Councilmen Thos Clancy, B.F. Day, Geo. W. Harris, Charles McDonald, B.L. Northup, Otto Ranke, U.M. Rasin & F. W. Wusthoff. Thereupon the following proceedings are had Petitions Rec'd From U.A. Carr for correcting assessment. Referred to Finance Committee. From D.T. Denny et al for permission to grade Front Street from Lake Avenue to Kentucky Street, along Kentucky Street to Harrison Street, along Harrison Street to Temperance Street along Temperance Street to Bluff Street. Granted surveyor instructed to make the necessary surveys & establish the grade elevations. From Clayton Bros et al for a sidewalk on Front & Columbia Streets fronting Lot 8 Block 8 of Boren's plat. Referred to Street Committee. From W. Brackett et al against granting a license to R. Pritchard for a salon on Jackson Street. Referred to Committee on Licenses. From Robt Abrams et al for correction of errors in amount of cost[ of Battery Street Improvement & for an extension of time. Referred to Finance Committee. From O.C. Shorey for permission to raise sidewalk between Cherry & Columbia Streets. Referred to Surveyor. From W. Harkins for an allowance on a/c of 4th Street grade. Dec 12/84 Be it remembered that on this the 12th day of December 1884 The Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in it's Council Chamber pursuant to adjournment. The Following Officers are present Towit: His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmen Geo. F. Frye, W.A. Harrington, B.L. Northup, Alfred Snyder, H.L. Yesler, W.G. Latimer & W.V. Rinehart. Thereupon the following proceedings are had: Petitions Rec'd From Trustees of Lake View Cemetery et al for repairing the Cemetery Road, Referred to Street Comtee From the Chief of Police suspending Officer Thomas Ross from the Police Force because of Drunkenness while on duty. In favor of said order Frye, Harrington, Northrup, Snyder, Yesler, Latimer, & Rinehart. Against the same; none. Communications and Reports From the Health officer on the petition of L.W. Foss recommending that an extension of time be granted to L.W. Foss and W.W. Evans in which to remove their slaughter Houses and that the Hog ranch Nuisance maintained by H. Chaffee be abated. Ordered that L.W. Foss and W.W. Evans have until April 1, 1885 in which to remove their Slaughter Houses. From the Street Committee on the petition of D.T. Denny et al for the extension and establishment of Rollin Street north to Pike Street at Fifth Street, recommending the granting of the petition. That the said Rollin Street be extended to stop at Sixth Street. Report adopted From Street Committee recommending that the claim of James Bogart be allowed in the sum of $15.00 ordered that the said claim be allowed in the sum of $24.60 From the Committee on Public Buildings, Property & grounds on Cemetery Matters. Report Adopted From the Com tee on Fire & Water supply recommending the placing of Fire Hydrants as follows: Corners of Front & Madison; Front and Columbia and Commercial & Washington.

584 Journal of the proceedings of the Jan 2/85 - is elected as justice of the Peace for the city firm Jan 5.1881. For the time provided by law. There being a vacancy in the newly created office of city Sexton the council proceeds to an election to fill such vacancy. Whereupon O C Shorey is elected to the office of city Sexton for the term provided by law. An ordinance to create a new cemetary is laid over until next meeting. Ordered that the matter of considering an ordinance to regulate the rule of intoxicating liquor be & is hereby laid over until next meeting. Ordered that the Sewer Committee be and is hereby granted further time in which to report on the Columbia Street sewer matter Ordered that the Council stand now adjourned approved John Leary, mayor
