York to Lincoln

beautiful edifice one of the handsomest I ever saw. It was getting light when we left York so I sat up & had a look at the country round about. I slept a little probably 2 or 3 hours but it is very un- comfortable sleeping in a railway carriage Mr Inglis (of Gall & Inglis late in the Northbridge) was in the same carriage. I would have spoken to him & asked him to call on you but as I thought I would have time to write soon & it was such a short time from leaving home that I thought it of little use. The great difference between the appearance of Scotland & England is the general level appearance of the latter there is scarcely a hill visible throughout the whole extent, especially in the Southern part. Their fields I think are more nicely laid out than in Scotland instead of being separated by stone walls, they had hedges running between which adds greatly to the general beauty of the country. 29.80. Menu. 83 I have had Dr. Morris's poney to ride now & then in the evening the day spent in reading eating sleeping. This morning at six left for Kyouk Phyoo. took the passage between the Barouges but encountering a heavy sea & severe squall at the entrance to Cambermere Bay we put back & took the passage through the Creeks.

Augt. 11th. 1858.

During the last three day[s] we have been on the passage through the Creeks we passed through great forests > & hills of jungle. Mrs Cales Leut Yuniam Dr. Morris & Mr Bisehat & [being struck through] Mr Johnson being passengers. today we anchored in Kyouk Phyoo harbour & fired a gun.

Called at Ripley's with Bowen & Dibbs last night asked to dinner today and tomorrow. Sat reading High lands & Islands of Scotland all day Ripley & Evans came on bd. went up & dined with Ripley. Met Ripley Evans Johnson Frenchman Young Morris Cassagne had a good dinner Sat Singing verse all round brought in the New Year 3 Cheers at 12 ocl. Sang Auld Lang Syne & drank to the health of Absent friends went om bd. with Bowen & Cassiagni about 1 ocl.
